McDonald. Grand River. Lot 14 has leceived the follow- ing letter which is of interest to ev- eryone. - ` 26th Can Batt. France Wednesday. May 15, 1918 Rev. Father John A. MacDonald Grand River, Lot 14. P. E. . Dear Father John:-James Sark and I are sitting at present ill the front yard oi' a little homo ill 11 ruined French Village, not far from the Front Line. The guns (our own guns) are booming around us and now and then Fritzy sends ovel/a few shells but, beyond that we are fairlysaio and are surrounded by some apple trees, lilac, and other shrubs in bloom. Also in the nearby garden are some straw- berry -plnn-ts in bloom us well _as cur- rant bushes, etc. This must have been a home (perhaps of the Parish Priest) or sollle other such personage-as ev- everythlng shows thought alld cure ev- oll through the ruins. The destroyed church is about 75 yards away a nice White Church in its time, bllt now 0 only a few white walls standing. Aldry. The juice of the frllit is little of the stained glass still .stick- ing in the iron frame of the windows.; and the big bell on the ground amidstl the ruins of the bell tower. The grave- yard, surrounding the church, not only containing the bodies of former residents of this -once pretty vll.lage_I but many bodies of brave dahdy French boys who have mad-e the great sacrifice, is also desecrated and some- what destroyed' by shell fire. This is a picture of many such fine old churches in F`rance'.`lh the Village next to us a once great church is also ill ruins, outside brick, -inside pure white. It would make many a. heart cry to see the ruin, as thollg-hts would colne to one's mind of its former beau- ty, value, and sacrcdness of the many eo lc \vho attended to their devot-. D D - ions under its roof for many years, prior to this' destruction. -- Jacob Peters, Matthew Bernard ll. J. Francis are also not fat' from us. We are all at present working some- what away from the Battalion fixing and digging trenches etc. - Joseph Tll-plin, Dennis Lewis, John Mitchell are in my platoon in the.26lh Battalion. All these boys are acrcdlt to themselves, to their Parish and their -loved' Island Home. Thomas Joseph 'Mltchell and iDanfi`el Peters are also with the Battalion doing their Bit. As also Barnaby Francis who is one of ther Headquarters Battalion l`tunners.Ail the boys are well. Sark and 1 were speaking of you last night ol' night before and were -saying how much you would like to be with us, and if we ever get home that you would "kill" your best goose (even two geese) for us and give us al real Father John wclcomc~so dec- ided to writc a letter. to you today' while -sitting out here in the sun.
