Great excitement was created in the vil- lage of Ste. Cunegonde by the report of a poisoning case. It appears that this after- noon about three o'clock Josephine March- and aera at the aa Court, accom- pani o friends deceased, and swore at Mcraction against Mrs. Dafort for poisoning her husband. She stated that she had been living in the same house with the Daforts. In November last Mrs. Dufert showed hera package she raid, death’s head on it, and was “marked '“ poison.” Mrs, Dufort, who could not ‘read, asked the meaning of the words. When she was told, she crumpled the paper up in her hand and kept it. Shortly before this she had told Mrs. Marchand that she intended to poison her husband. Muss Marchand suid that the paper contained sugar of lead, land that a dose was administered to the hasband in a cup of tea, and that she saw some of the sediment that remained in the cup. Another dose was given in a sand- wich of head cheese and bread. Miss Marchand further said that it was her be- lief that poison was given in small doses till the man died. Miss Marchand and her friends saw Coroner Jones and requeste i that an inquest be held. Their request will be complied with. Tabian Dufort, brother of the deceased, is reported as saying that Mrs. Dufort had time and again asked him to promise to marry her if she would poison his brother. His. brotner ' : > Royal Insurance CODY 23 we atjocwedin'spinta, Ho had ot jhin that he was afraid to eat any food prepared by his wife. His brother died in the greatest pain, froth- mouth. After he was dead his legs and arms had to be fractured to get him in his coffin. Before the last breath was out of his mouth, she began moving the household effects, and they were all removed by midnight. She did notstay in the hous= with the corpse, and was actually bargaining to dispose of it to a doctor when the Grand Trunk Benefit Society, of which he was a member, took the burial arrangements upon itself. A month or so ago she had offered her husband a cup of milk, but he »efused to take it. Beer of German manufacture has for some time past been conveyed in large quentities by steamer from Adriatic ports t» Aden and other towns in Arabia, but so fond have the natives become of the bever- age that a temperance movement has been started in various parts of Southern Arabia. The religious authorities have been promi- nent in furthering the agitation. At Muscat it is said that all the mosques have publicly condemned German heer, and pronounced direful future punish- ment on all who partake of it. The Sultan however, permits Jews and Hindoostanees to sell the drink, on condi:ion that the ohject is medicinal. The Isle of Skye. eo To the Editor of the Scottish-American Journal, Dear Sir,—In reading the ence of ** Rutherglen” in your valuable paper concerning the Island of Bute, the id-a occurred to me that it sould not be awiss to publish some interesting facts con- cerning another very notable island—the Isle of Skye—whose grand and romantic scenery is unsurpassed by any of the Western Hebrides, and whose people are celebrated for their religious principles, loyalty, intelligence, and valor. The Isle of Skye has, during the of forty years, furnished the British public service with twenty-one lieutenant- ils and major-generals ; forty-five licutenant- col nels, six hundred majors, captains, lientenants, and subalterns ; ten thou and foot soldiers; one hundred and twenty pipers ; foar Governors of British Colonies; one Governor-Geveral; ene Adintant- General one Chiet Baron of England ; and j land. When it is considered that the island is only sixty miles in length, with an average breadth of twenty miles, it hus been well ssid by an Edinburgh paper that ‘‘ truly arising from youthful indiscretions are s: eedi- | the inhabitants are a wondrous people.” ly removel by that wonderful Yours truly, A Guencarry SolATHANACH.
