Jeatrice for Ger- et BE The University Boat Race. Great crowds lined the river to witness the race between the Oxford and Cambridge crews at Putney, on the 22nd inst. The course was the usual one, from Putney to Mortlake, 44 miles. The Oxford crew was the first te paddle to the starting point, and having previously won the toss, took the Middlesex side of the river. Two minutes after the boats reached the start- ing point a magnificent start was effected at the rate of 40 strokes per minute. For some vards the boats continued level, but the Cambridge crew rowing a quicker stroke drew ahead, and were leading by a of a length when last seen from this point. When the beats rounded Craven Point, six furlongs from the start, and came in sight of Hammersmith, the Cambridge crew was still leading, but so slightly that the lead was almost im- perceptible until the boats were actually opposite the persen watching them from the bank of the river. Just before reach- ing Hammersmith bridge Oxferd made a grand effort and rapidly drew up. W hen the boats passed under the bridge, a mile further on, the Cambridge crew was leading quarter e, Was intense & \of Franklin Point, by a quarter of a length. The excitement and there was great shouting ‘‘Gambridge wins.” Hammersmith ridge being generally regarded as the erit- ical point of the race. At 10.59 o clock, when the boats were sighted from Barnes, ‘they were making their way up Corney | Reach, abeut two and a half miles from ‘the start, the Oxford crew leading by some lengths.
