SS ESSESBSCE 9SSS9233 3E3-39433 i eal ge WEEDS. A leading educationist is quoted as declaring that he did not believe one farmer in a dozen could give the gener- ally accepted common names of tweniy common weeds. The average agri- culturist’s botanical knowledge would probably be exhausted when he had recognized and named the Canada thistle, the oxeye daisy and the wild mustard plant, which, with the wild oat, couch grass and rag weed, are at the head of a list of thirty-two plants pre- pared for the Ontario Depariment of Agriculture as most commonly abund- ant in that province. A weed has been epigramatically defined as a plant out of place. Only some are always con- demnable; some are valuable, when not found in ground intended for other uses. The general indictment against them has seven heads. They absorb soil moisture; they use plant food; they shade, crowd and choke useful plants; they increase the labor and expense of cleaning seed; they interfere with the regular rotation of crops; they har- bor the spores of injurious fungi, they § offend the eye. The loss they cause is difficult to estimate. but has been placed by some who have studied the matter at a dollar for every cultivated acre. ‘They are a trouble to the care- ful as well as to the careless farmer, because their seeds are so easily scatter- ed that one bad farm may distii ute them over a countryside. The wind takes some up, like those of the thistle, and wafts them for miles. Some drop into the water, and are carried in brooks and strearas to fields far separa- ted from their place of origin. Birds and animals take up others and drop them where they can do most harm. The great distributor, however, is man, His waggons, railway cars, and other vehicles are constantly conveying s2eds of various kinds from one place to another. He sends them in seed grain. “ We nave just advanced the price of canned meat 25 cents a dozen caas”—' Cleveland Plain Dealer. Some closly tested samples showed 200 weeds seeds to an ounce, a fact that gives point to the complier’s re- mark that the cheapest seed is almost invariably the dearest in the end. Much else is told of weeds, and their divisions into annuals, which gerrain- ate, bleom, fruit and die in ene sea- son; winter annuals, which germinate iu the autumn, pass the winter as seed- lings’ and bloom, fruit and die during the following summer; biennials which and flowers andseed the second, and perennials, which last from year to year, blooming and _ seeding annually. The knowledge of the aivision to which a weed belongs is often of im- portance in dealing with it for its erad- ication, and it isto spread knowledge | produce leaves and roots the first year, | — = _ — of this kind that the department has issued in its pamphlet, prepared by Mr. F. C. Harrison, B. S. A. and which might serve asa textbcok for beginners in agrfcultural botany. In regard to all weeds, whatever their class or habits, however, there is essential to their destruction first of all a determin- ation to endthem, and this determin- aiion is not found as often as is desir- able. Ninty-five per cent. of the answers to a set of queries indicate that the weed laws are not inforced. When determination exists the rest is Leasy. The first step advised is to re- move from fields all piles uf stones, which become harboring places for the the “snake” or rail fence, whose cor- nuisances. The plough and the culti- vator are the main factors in the rest of the proceedings. Where they are used regularly throughout a season, as a crop of weeds shows itself, the worst infested field may be cleaned, and have much added to its value. Trouble in The Stomach Which Doctors Failed to Remove, Cured by Less Than Two Boxes of Dr. Chase’s Kidney-Liver Pilis. he experience of Mr. Blackwell is similar to that of many sufferers with cYronie indigestion. Stomach medicines will seldom really cure indigestion. The kidneys and liver must be set right, and the bowels made regular and active, Mr. Joseph Blackwell, Holmesville, Cnt., says :—‘‘I derived more benefit from the use of Dr. Chase’s Kidney- iver Pills than from any other medi- cine I ever took, and can highly re-« commend them for stomach troubles, I was in a terrible state and could hardly work at my trade, I tried most every kind of medicine and doctors, until I was tired doctoring, and bee fore I used one box of Dr. Chase’s Kid- ney-Liver Pills I could see that they were helping me, and after taking a box ard a half, fourd that I was cured.”’ Nearly every family on the continent has used Dr. Chase’s Kidney-Liver Pills or heard of the remarkable cures | they have effected. IN-CHIEF, Field Marshal Count von Waldersee, recently appointed to the command of the German forces in China, and look- ed upon as likely to be chosen as com- mander-in-chief of the international forces, said this evening :— “My appointment is due entirely to the initiative of Emperor William. I evil, and, as far as_ possible, to abolish , shall scart for China, going probably by way Of San Francisco, in a short time. I am fully aware of the great difficulties I shall have to meet in China and of ners are nurseries for all sorts of plant | the extre me delicacy of my position there, but Ican only say that I shall do my best to prove myself worthy of the honor, and of the confidence placed in me by the Kaiser. Countess von Waldersee will accompany me to the United Siates.” Ii is understood that the Kaiser, some weeks ago broached the subject of the chief command to Count von Waldersee, basing his proposal upon the condition that all the others pow- ers should acquiesce in the appoint- ment. The Czar, with whom the count is an especial favorite, immediate- ly consented, France following some- what reluctantly. The consent of Austria-Hungaria, Italy and Creat Britain was next received, and that of Japan came last. The German For- eign office said this evening, the con- sent of the United States and the other | powers had been virtually obtained. — — PROPERTY IN GHARLOTIETO¥ ..
