Private Wire) NEW YORK, April French have submitted a. peace plan for Europe. It is expected that Germany will oppose it. News from Ethiopia. continues conflicting. Domestically the mat favorable news is the report of General Motors sales, for month of Mhrch which was the highest for any month since May 1938. we believe this stock will do better. California Packing is scheduled to have a dividend meeting today. We would look for another ir- regular firm market today with better prices for utilities, includ- ing American Water Works, North American, Elec Bond share also the rails including New York Cen- tral, southern Pacific and North- ern Pacific. Also Chrysler and the rubber stocks. MON'I'R.EAL, April 9—1Iudson Bay mining and smelting reports for 1935 a net. profit of $4,771,383 against $3,645,012 in the preceding year. Deduction of clepreciation, etc. left a balance for the common stock of $3,215,187 equal to $1.17 is share. NEW YO , April 9—Copper Metal—Effec ive at close business Monday General Cable Corp. will advance price of bare magnet wire and weatherproof wire 1-4 cent a pound. Anaconda wire cable ad- vances prices Monday 1-4 cent a pound. Phelps Dodge Copper Co also advances prices 1-4 cent a 9—’l'he ‘ pound Monday. MORNING STOCK I.ET'i'EII. e New York morning papers today offer plenty of evidence in favor or the bullish-point of view. The iron age estimate of Mseel produc- tion of 66 per cent is t.he highest since June 1930. The adjusted in- dex of power production has mov- ed up to an all time high. General Motors sales for March and for the first quarter were the best on record for these periods. The president of American Rad- iator stated that sales of this company in the first quarter were 30 per cent ahead of a year ago. It is expected that the carloadlngs statement will show a gain of at least 10 per lent over correspond- ing week of 1935. Meanwhile the European political situation has been growing calmer and the lat- at flurry over the possibility of franc devaluation has subside‘-. It has been the tendency of the market this year to move ahead sharply for two or three sessions and then fluctuate in a trading range for longer periods while it consolidates its gain.. While the trade news is expected to become more rather than less favorable, repetitions of this trading pattern are to be expected. It is expected that volume which so far has av- eraged well under that of the first 3 months of the year will become larger before the advancing phase is culminated. - Mt '1. MEL- LOW SOIL IS BEST. \ gl \ mg Maw AND |r.1PROVE.D STRAIN or-' THICK LEAVED SPINACH HAS arcome A FAVORITE WlTH THE HOME olaceusn. One of the first spring opera- ticns in th: vegetrvble gaiden is sowing the seed of spinach. This fast—gro\ting, hardy edible can be put into the ground as soon as the soll drains enough so that it can be worked. and will be ready for the table with the earliest radlshes and the leaf lcttui-e. But a “crop of spinach doesn't pay," say a few housewives. Let them grow a crop of the new spinach and find out for t.hem- selves. for the new thick-leaved varieties me so far superior from the ordinary ruin of the garden types which are found on the market, that they are almost on- tirely new vegetables. Like many other vegetables, spin- ach must be given the attention which only the amateur with -1 small gardrn can give it. The old_- time method of broaoastlng seed as if sowing a lawn and letting the plants shift for them selves never gave the best results and is even worse for the heavier leaved typos than it was for the old-time skimlli’ types. For best results plant in rows. thin to 6 inches apart and each spinach plant will produce a large rosette of leaves. By this method the plant can be made to do triple duty by cutting the leaves and let- ting it grow more, instead of pul- ling it up bodily as is usually the l custom, thus limiting each plant to a single crop. 1".ake the soil as mellow and rich as possible for spinach. It is a short season crop and all short season crops must make speedy growth to produce best results. Warm sandy soil which has been well supplied with plant food is ideal for a good stand. Cultivation speeds the wth. spinach seed can be sown just as soon as the soil is in condition. regardless of late frosts. It can even be sown in the fall and allow- ed to come up in the spring as soon as germinating weather ar- rives. Get the seed in early. thin the plants carefully, cultivate, and fertilize with 4 pounds of complete plant good for every 100 square feet- of area, and you will have a sur- prising yield of real greens. Make sure you buy one of the new types. some are more heat resistant than others. If you have light warm soil or a southern slope to your garden where it gets the run force of the sun the bcttcr heat-roasting types will be best for you. N. Y. A included. If planted in a prominent position. they add surprisingly to the character of the garden. If the rockery is small. a better effect is gained by planting a few groups of various kinds than many single plant. As with so many other hobbies, it is a matter of tnst:. If you are not impatient it is a good plan to start your rockery with the slower-growing Alpines, although it is equally good advice to have a few free-growing plants, such as aubretla and alyssum, which can be discarded or transferred to another part of the garden when the rarer specimens have establish- ed themselves. ROCKERY PLANTING HINT Amateur rock-gardeners fail - to realise the importance of firm planting. If inserted in loose .soil, the plants very seldom succeed. The plants should be taken from their pots leaving the ball of earth intact, and pressed firmly into the crevice. adding more soil and pressing down firmly. Plants raised from seeds require addi- tional care. If the roots are small ‘ and many, they should be spread well out in a hole made large enough to accommodate them com- fortably. Pia ts with a tap root going stralgh down should be given 3. deep root run in as iiatlirnl ii position as possible Alpines should be well watered and kept moist when first planted. The rock garden requires oc- casional manuring, and fine bone- meal worked into the soil once a fortnight during the spring should be sufficient. Once you have started a rock garden, you will find it a fascinat- l lng hobby. and before long you will turn your thoughts to the beautiful , rock orchids. which can be grown . in many fantastic shapes. I The names of a. few cvcrygrcen 1 rock plants would be useful. Among I the prettiest are:—A’i-abia, Armeria. _ Gentlana Acaulis, saxifi-urge, Linum ‘Arboreum. These will give you beauty and colour when the rest of your garden is dormant.
