ie CURRENT NOTES Mr. C. J Brydges has been elected presi dent of the Board of Trade for the ensuing year According to the returns of the statistical department at Washington, as given in a special builtin jost issued, the exportation from the United Scates of previsions, tal low, and dairy produce for 1882 showed a very considerable decline as compared with that of the previous year, the toral amounts ; being $96,934 000 and $133.332,000 1 spectively. The velue of bacun exported has falien from forty-eight to thirty three millions; hams, from thirty-three to twenty seven millions; and cheese, from fifteen to eleven millions. M. Asakotf, who was on intimate terms with General Skobeleff, publishes in the} last number of his paper, the St. Peters. | burg Rus, an interesting account of the celebrated speech to the S-rvian delegati n that rang like a war cry through Europe. [t appears the speech was in reality never delivered, but Faroey from statements of students, pieced by all the ingenuity and talent at the com mand of the Nouvelle Revue. It contained much Skobeleff had said, but it was greatly Ihe i¢ exaggerated. Gen, Skobeleff allowed himself to be persuaded not to deny its authenticity, and afterwards _re- ceived the thanks of M. Gambetta, who said the speech had done great gocd, filled all hearts with patriotic ardor, and aroused the hopes of a Franco-Russian alli- ance. ‘‘Celaa pris comme un trainee de poudre,” he said. ‘*Look at the telegrams I have just received from Marseilles. The tleet and the army are wild with enthusi- asm." Gambetta further spoke of the value of a Franco-Kussian alliance, saying among | other things, ‘‘ Thank God that you have no Parliament; if you had one you would go | on talking for over a hundred years without doing anything.” A cable despatch from Berlin states that the press there continue to discuss methods | for collisions at sea. The Messrs tages of lightiag instancing the preventing vessels by electricity, | escape of the er Faraday by this means when laying | cables.” No discussion could be more] timely, but the problem of the adaptability of the electric light for penetrating thick fogs at sea ought to be at once settled by careful, scientific investigations undertaken | by all maririme nations independently. The | London Shipping Gazette recently raised the | question whether, as marine law now stands | a vessel employing the electric light in | hazy weather would not be violating the | regulations which prescribe the green and | red lights. But if the electric light is found | to penetrate fog further than the regula- | tion lights, as it is almost certain it will | do, it cannot be reasonably objected | that it interferes with the regulation lights, | which are often invisible to vessels in fogzy | weather until they approach each other so closely that collision is inevitable. In the ease of a vessel employing the new light it | could not fairly be claimed, should collision occur, that she had thereby contributed to bring ahout the disaster, unless it could be proved that the electric light had diminish- ed the visibility of her side lights. But it| remains to be tested whether the vessel’s | side lights are not rendered more visible by the electric lights than they would other- wise be in dense h»z2 at sea. If the latter illuminant is capable of piercing fog to greater distances than the ordinary lights the existing regulations can he easily and safely modified to admit of its introduction on all ocean-going vessels. Horsford’s Acid Phosphate Makes a cooling drink. Into a tumbler of ice Water put a teaspoonful of Acid Phosphate; add sugar to the taste. nnn a An enormous ice flee has driven out to} sea four steamers which were ice-bound in| the Odessa roads. The fate of the vessels | is unknown. + <- < A SINGLe box of Mack’s Magnetic Vedi- cine will prove to any sufferer fiom nervous prostration or weakness of the gonerative | organs, that it is the best and cheapest medicine ever sold for this class of disease.
