(GP)— Two bodies, one lashed to a tub- her life raft, were f 1nd Friday in Lake Erie by the US. Coast Guard and the search continued for three other men aboard an offshore gasdrifling rig destroyed by gales. The three still missing are pre- sumed to have drowned as well when (SO-unile-an—houtr gales be- fore dawn Thunsday demolished the platfomn and tower anchored 14 miles off the southern Ontario shore. Names of the two found were not immediately known. The coast guard took the bodies to Eric, Pta., where positive identifi- cation later will be made by of- ficials of Underwater Gas Devel- opers Limited, the firm that rented the rig to a drilling sub- contractor. The cutter Kaw, jointing Cana- dian and Amenican planes in a search that began eame Thurs- day, came upon the nude body lashed to the raft \about eight miles ofif Erie. The second body was found in the come genenl area. M: 1 Grass And Grain Confined In Double Duty Russian Crop By ALTON BLAKESLEE Associated Press Science Writer Russian scientists are planting a doubleduty wonder crop. In June they expect to cut it for grass to feed cattle. And then let it grow up again to yield a harvest of wheat for humans next fall. Known as “grain - fodder” be- cause it would feed both humans and animals, this plant still is experimental, says Peter Lapin, assistant director of the main Botanical Gardens in Moscow It comes from a cross or mar- riaige of wheat and wild grasses in experiments conducted by aca- demician Nikolai Tsitsin. one of Russia's leading botanists. Prof. Tsitsin also is trying to develop perennial type of wheat. The double-duty grain - fodder plant also belongs to the peren- nial type, Latpin says, but “it is not good enough at wintering yet." Some of its is being tested on experimental plots at the Botan- ical Gardens, which have green- tropical houses crammed with plants from around the world. PLANT IN OCTOBER “You plant the grainnfoidder in October and ’it gives grass for its “It first harvest,” Lapin says. ngs after that cutting. and yields grain for the second har- vest. . “Or the first yield can be grain, If you have a wet spring; then you get the grass later. It prem- ises to be very useful in our cli- mate because sometimes we have very dry springs. After first giv- ing grass, it would yield grain after the summer rains.” Prof. Tsitsin 25 years ago be- to cross strains of wild and culti- vated wheat with wild grasses— “which usually are the enemy of gan breeding experiments the farmer," Lalpin says. llf his double-duty plant suc- ceeds, it would be his greatest, achievement. But a problem is that only a small percentage of the plants a main problem is avoiding ster- ility in the first generation. To overcome this, Prof. Tsitsin is using a chemical. colchicine, which stops cell division. Lapin says this metthod shows promise. Prof. Tsihsin earlier developed a hybrid of winter wheat that is economically important, giving higher yields and possessing a Lynsenko, declares Lapin. Lysenko maintains genetics or heredity of plants land presum- ably humansl can be altered by environment. But some of his re- sults were apparently due to acci- dental cross - fertilization of plants, or plain bad observation in the view of Western scientists. Lynseko now is in semi—eclipse, after being backed ealier by such powerful figurr as Stalin. Grainafodder would be a feat rivalling the aims of Lysenko. P. E. I. POTATO! DEALERS: Gentlemen: Some growers and shippers are putting the Island potato mar- ket in Ontario in jeopardy, according to information received a few days ago from various receivers of our Island potatoes. While for the most part the potatoes shipped from here are of good quality and in clean packages, this is not 100 percent true. The principal objection is in packages not properly weighed, and in many cases short weight. We have the cooperation of the Island Potato Inspectors, and in any case where a scale is provided weights have been checked and a notation made on the certificate. Where scales are not available notation to that effect is made. It should be obvious that it would be to your advantage to provide scales at car or warehouse where loading takes'place, as with a notation “scales not available" you would certainly be at a disadvantage should a claim arise for short weight. Further to this, attractive packing in cars with brand side up and neatly packed. adds to the “eye-appeal” ‘ give a second generation, Lapinl says. It has to be improved.
