Behm & Wagner pub- lish periodically a statement giving parti- culars on the topic. According to a new ‘edition of their publication the total popu- | lation of the glebe is estimated at 1,433,- /887,500. Only two years have elapsed since _ the last issue of the work, and then the ‘es imate was 1,453,923,500, showing an a} parent decrease in two years of about (22 000,000. This is a most unexpected lre-ult, as the recent censuses of all the principal netionalities show an increase of about thitty-two millions over the previous ‘numbers, The difference arises from the fact that the previous esimate of the popu- lation of the Chinese Empire was far 100 hiph. <A migid scrutiny of the Celestial returis shows greatiy reduced numbers, the population being about 370,000,000 ifste. d of 480,000,000. During the last ten years the po, ulation of the world has in- creas 6 about 38,000,000. Ip the preseot population is rated at »743,400, showing an increase of about 12,000,000 ‘over the previous figures. In Asia, making ‘allowance for the readjustment of the popu- lation of China, there has been an increase vf 20 000,000. Speaking of increase of population, there 1s » wonderrul difference between the con- dition of France as compared with that of -Gicat Britain. The poptlation of the former country is not increasing rapidly, noi wi’ hgtavding that there is litthe emigra- ticn frow it, while Great Britain is sending forth t» all quarters of the globe thonsands awually, wed yet her population is inoreas- ing more rapidly than that of France. The ditleren e in feeundity is certainly great, and somewhat difficulty to ace unt for. ‘The scourge of war with which the earth was affliced to a moch greatir extent in f ser «ges than now must have tended to Gimmish its population, and modern in- e‘casc is mainly attributable to the com pa ative absence of this scourge, as well ae to the progress made in the moral and swcial the existing dynasty spoke of the confidence which the Czar reposed in his subjects. How it was discovered that this counter- fit presentment of the monarch of 100,- 000,000 people, was nothing but a waxen doll cluthed in the Imperial uniform, we are not told, but the move is attril-uted to the ingenuity of Tolstoi and Pededonoseff. It is also said that the Czar allowed him- self to be persuaded that a risk, which he would not venture te incur, should seem to have been incurred, in order to re-awaken the loyal ardour of the people of the capi- tal, which had declined during his long seclusion. Of course, simple assertion in such a case of sensational invention is not enough. It is added that His Majesty, when he heard the plan proposed, threw himself on Tolstoi's neck in an outburst of giaitude. The experiment, it would ap- pevr, succeeded, as no attack is reported to bave been made ou the Imperial cortegu. A practical joke, which nearly had a ve uppleesapt ending, was played on a cou 4 of young people at «n evenings party a ie evel ings ago. The joke was not a new one, but it threatened at one time to be atten- ed with novel consequences to one of the perpetrators. The victims were a young lady from Quebec and a young gentleman well known in seciety in Mcen- treal. Previous to requesting a dance, the young man senght. the hon- or of an introduction to the © fair Quebecer. This gave a waggish individual, who was asked to effect the introduction, his opportunity. He promised to ask the the young lady if he might be allowed to present his friend, but et the same time re- marked, “‘she’s very deaf, you'll have to shout at ber.” Then preferring his request to the lady, he made the same remark about his friend, with the warning that she would have to speak londly into his ear if she wanted to be heard. Thus, having paved the way, he told the joke to several others present, and the denouement was avaitvd. The resuit may be imagined, ludicrous it certainly was, especially in the sudden lu] of music aud conversation, to hearaledy and gentleman shouting the inst Conventional prases at each otner as if they were talking through a telephone out of order. Presently a gencrai titter w~le them aware that they were victims of -oue pleasantry. The lady retired; not so with the male Victim; he lreathed threat- enings and siaughter, and but for timely interferenve the drawing-room might have proved a deadly battle-ground.
