It would be im possible, perhaps, to have such a match in amore thoroughly N. P. town than Fred ericton, as difficulty might be experienced in getting a Grit eleven together. Judson Walcott, on being sent to the | Eastern Penitentiary of Pennsylvania on a| twelve years sentence, swore that he would | never do any work in the prison. Although | subjected to all the allowable punishments, such as bread and water diet and confine- | ment ina dark cell, he adhered to his de- termination. Had he been tractable, the system of commutation for good behavior would have shortened his term to less than ten years. He has just been discharged, fat, healthy and boastful of his success in having his own way. Mr; Belt, the sculptor whose libel suit has excited such sensation in London, is declared to be the beau ideal of the modern type of artist. He wears his hair floating in graceful curves over his coat collar. His waiscoat is of chocolate- colored velvet, and his scarf of crimson silk. Hestated himself to be 31 years old, | but looks older, and has an honest face He had been, he said, messenger to Spot- iswood, the printer, and while he occupied that microscopic position he had carved | with a nail a man’s head upon a stone he| had picked up near the Houses of Parlia- | ment. This head attracted the attention of a gentleman, who induced the great sculptor Foley to take him as assistant. Some twelve years ago Tennyson built a house on the northern slope of Blackdown, a lordly hill two miles to the north east of our village, and just opposite Hindhead, these being the two eminences which guard the valley east and west. The honse is a large, imposing stone structure, built in a free treatment of domestic Gothic of the Tudor period, the entrance being a large porch with five pointed arches. The laur- eate can be as solitary here as the most confirmed anchorite, since his is the only | residence on the hill. A_ carriage road winds up Blackdown on the western side as far as Tennyson's, enabling too many persons to come near the honge for the poet's pleasure. Very many distinguished men are slowly drawn up the hill, on flying visits to the laureate—the Duke of Argyle and his Scotch gillie being on the ascent BIBLE PRAYER MEETING DiscreLes or CHRIST meet when we were last that way. Tennyson naturally dislikes to find persons creeping around his grounds, and plucking leaves | | from his plants as momentos, as they con- stantly do at Freshwater. Once, seeing a face peering at him while eating his dinner, the exasperated poet left the table, exclaim- ing that he could no longer take his meals in comfort withont being watched.—A/ice Maude Fenn, in the ** Midsummer Holiday number of The Century. ; -<ape- Mack’s Maeneric Mepicine is a positive remedy for pervons exheustion and all weak ness of the generative organs in both sexes.
