They came to Cape Breton late in
the year 1784 undef: the leader-
ship of Hon. Abraham Cuyler, for-
merily mayor of Albany, N. Y., and
since the newly appointed governor
had not arrived, the colonists spent
the first winter at Louisburg.
In the spring under the leader-
ship of DesBarres, who had already
selected a site for his capital, they
moved in a. body to the present 1o-
catlon of Sydney and commenced
the work of clearing the land. So
little was the significance of the
date regarded that in subsequent
years it has entirely disappeared.
The town sits was staked out on
an elaborate plan by the army an-
_glneer, Tait, and barracks com-
menced for reception of six com-
panies of the 33rd Regiment, which
had arrived from Halifax under
the command of Lieut. Colonel
Yorks. According to a faithful
chronicle of the expedition, Yarke‘s
men, as well as officers of the civil
government, had long to reside in
tents and shanties of the meanest
description.
DesBal-res estimated the total
population of Cape Breton Island
at date of proclamation, 1785, at
800, but so effective was his prim-
itlve “ad” for settlers that within
it fow months 3,390 more Loyalista
general site, instead of such man
choslng a. site and building for
himself. The town was carefully
planned on regular city lines, and
afterwards granted in parcels to
those who cleared it. and others.
There was no scarcity of land, and 1
the liberal ideas of the army en- l
gineers in regard to its use sm
still perpetuateddn various feat-

The deceased had been in his ap-
parently usual good condition of
health and was busy with his work
every day. No one ever suspected
that there was any weakness in his
rugged constitution. Because of this
all were greatly shocked when it was
learned that Mr. McLean had sud-
denly passed away. It is generally
believed that heart trouble was the
cause of his death. Anyway, on the
morning of the above mentioned
date when his loved ones entered
his bed room, they found that his
gentle spirit had taken its home-
ward flight.
Mr. James McLean was the son
of the late Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm
McLean, Brookfield, and was one of
a family of seven members. Of these
seven, five survive the deceased.
These are Mrs. David McCleave,
Stewlacke, NS.; Mrs. Frank Con-
stantine, Medford, Mass.; Mrs. Benj.
Beers, Dorchester, Mass.: Mrs. Lin-
coln Lewis, Nantucket, Mass., and
Miss Annie McLean at home. An-
other brother Daniel Mchea.-l posed
away some twenty-six years ago,
Mr. McLean was a young man of
strong and noble character and was
held ln high esteem by all who knew
him. Hs will be much missed by a
large circle of relatives and friends.
The funeral, which was a very
large one, was conducted by Rev. G.
Carlyle Webster in the unavoidable
absence of his Minister, Rev. R.
Hensley Btsvert. The pail bearers
were Messrs. Angus McLean, Stirling
McLean, Samuel Drummond, Tho-
mas Drummond, Walter McLeod and
George Stetson. Interment was in
the Presbyterian Cemetery, Brook-
field.
