Owe result of the present activity in the areenals of Great Britain and the reported warlike intentions of the British Govern- ment, is intense public interest in the pre- sent position of Egypt. Egypt, it is well known, is a tributary state, peying the Sultan of Turkey every year tribute money to the amount of about $5 300,000. Great Britain obtained a foothold iv the country in this way : Turkey’s vassal, the Khedive, got ioto financial difficultie. For the protection of his creditors, English and French commissivners wers placed in charge of the revenues and finances of the Conditions established by the commissioners were disturbed in 1882 by the revolt of Arabi Pasha. The Sulian couldn’t and wouldn’t suppress the re- bellion; the Government of Great Britain asked the Government of France to assist in putting counbtry. it down; but France, in a moment of weakness, declined,—and Great Britain went in alone. Subsequently the occupation of Egypt by Great Britain was recognized by Turkey; and Great Britain, on her part, recognized the nominal sov~ ereigoty of the Sultan. Upon these cor- ditions Great Britain has brought order out of chaos in Egypt,—has ‘iterally saved tue country from ruin, and has crowned her work by the occupation of the Soudan on behalf of the Egyptian Government, After all this has been accomplished, ‘he fiads the Sultan and the Government of France plotting and working together to wrest from her tue fruits of ber 'abors and the advantages of ber conquest. She finds Babr-+l-Glazel—an important part of the conquered country—leased by Turkey to France, and she finds Russia and France enleringintoan engagement to unite in oust- gve hae done and suffered and all that the Sultanof Turkey, the French and other creditors of Ezypt ard the people of Ezyp: at large have obtained her action. coneeguent upon It will be admitted that Great Britain bas cause for her irritation and that the placing cf her army and navy upon a war footing for the purpose of defeating the «mes of her jealous and Cipic unprin- emies is but @ measure of pru- dence. if the Sultan had assumed the l-ast Tesponsibility for the goveroment of Egypt; if France bai helped in any con siderable degree to administer the affairs of Egypt or win back the Soudan ; if Russia bad apy material interest in the governmen: of Egypt, there might be some excuse, some justification forthe plottiog that has been discovered. But not having done so, there is no excuse, no justifica- tion for their efforts to bring about the overthrow of the power of Great Britaiu in Egyptthat hss been fairly won by eword and statecraft. ~~ — Yon will vot know how much good Hood’s Sursapari!la will do you until you try i. The following extract froma Kentish newspaper illustrates the strictness of the methodsin vogue by English licensing niagietrater; At the Dartford Ajourned Licensing Sex.- sions, Francis Joho Ford, landlord o' the Kailwav Hot |, Sidenp, oneof the largest aud most commodious hotels on the South Eastern Live, applied for a renewal! of his licens). The justices, since the regular anov | liceusing bay, have had a notice Of ofj ‘ion eerved on the appli cant, on the y ound that he bad Veen con vieted for druokeness at the Greenwich P. lee Court last February, Mr, Fore, i» add'tion to being lanclord of the hot] was ‘lsoa traveller for the Deptford Diet Hery, and the hotelin Sideup was carried on bv his wifeand daughters. 11 was admitted by the pclice that the house was conducted in @ most respectat |- manvoer. Mr Lawless, barrister, stated that Mr Ford has been to a birthday party on the occasion which formed the sutject of the objection, and bad unfortunately taken were drink then was good for him, He urged that the offence, under the circum- stances, should pot entail the very seriou- penelty of forfeiture of his license, Mr Ford expressed his very great regret tor what had taken place; and there were present several of the most respectable i: - babitants of Sidcup who would, if neces-- ary speak to the exc lient character of the Louse, The chairman of the bench (Mr Thos. Bevan, said the Court felt that a man whe had @ license should be above repro»ch a- a sober man, and they would sot be doing their duty if they renewed hie license. Mr Furmage who appeared for the owr- ers of the house, asked the Magistrates to allow him to make a few remarks before their decision was recorded. The chairman said the court could no: allow their decision to be discussed, and refured to hear Lim. Mr Ford has been in the house about s year and a half, and has the lease for teo years, The effect of the decision, it is con- sidered, entaile a loss upon bim of some thing like £10,000. -———_ , Avoid Coughing.
