Rectors and Vestries. | One of the most vexing, perplexing ques: | tions of the day in the church is the pro- per, Christian relation that should exist be- tween the priest in his parish, and the ves | try. That there is confusioa of thought | and action, as to this relation, goes with- out saying. Throughout the Church the | clergy are complaining ot what are some- | what impatiently called lay popes, that is of the rough riding of laymen over the per- sons and spiritual rights of the clergy. Now, whenever there is a great smoke | there must be some fire; whenever there is | a general complaint, there mast be an under: | lf the clergy generally | ! | } | i lyimg grievance, , are complaining of lay laverference, there must be some cause for it, Lt does not, of course, follow that all the clergy complain | of is true; for clergymea, like other men, | see things from their own point of view, | and are apt as others to take a one sided | view of their dit :ul'ies. The lay view of | things is necessary to complete the picture | But that friction exists cannot bo put) cutoff sight. Now it is self-evident to any | thoughtful man that the church cannot | prosper as it ought to prosper, whue either the clergy on the one hand, or the laity on the other, are self-seeking or oppressive, | lf the clergy usucp authority over liymen (or ecek to do it) which, ether by the law or Goud er the canons of this Church ta not theirs to possess, confusion and weakness, and loss must inevitably result. The clergy are not lurds over the household of Gc, but their servants for Christs’ sake. But on the other hand, the lity are not masters | over the clergy, to dictate to them how] they shll conduct themselves in the Hicuse of G d. The !.ity have their lawful and proper re nedy, if they think at any time the priest oversteps his pliin right and duty under the law. The canons define that remedy. The rector should see to it that his laymen are properly instructed as to the extent of their lawful right and duty. No priest should wait until a difficulty arises between him and his vestry to instruct the latter as | to their functions and duty. At that time passion is apt to put aside calm considera- of the subject. [t may, we think, be safely asserted that nine tenths of the difficulties that arise be- tween the clergy and their vestries spring trom ignorance of their mutual relations and duties, and the consequent want of Christian consideration for one anotber’s rizhts. Too often the clergy, as well as the | laity, are ignorant of the common law. The rriest tuo often concedes to his vestry what hs has no right to concede. Too often the vestry assume in perfect good faith rights which dv not belong to them.— American Paper. the one class to the other. _-_.- A Remarkable Offer. For several years a Boston business house has made persons on farms, in towns and the suburbs of cities who keep poultry, few or many, remarkabie offers of premi- ums payable in gold, some as high as, fifty dollars to the first and not less than five dollars to any winner of a premium. The best thing about these annual offers, is that the firm makirg them is strictly re- liable and the premiums have always been promptly paid as agreed in gold cvin. Fifty dollar premiums do not ‘grow on every bush” ss the old saying is, and we have no doubt to many who competed for them, the amount received came in handy to help pay the necessary bills of a hard winter, or if not, buy some luxury that the family absolutely needed, but otherwise could not affurd. This same firm, I. S. Johnson & Co., 22 Custom House St., Boston, Mass., authorize us to state to our readers that they have prepared an offer of similar premiums this year as heretufore, with one very important improvement and that is, so that the first winner stands a fair chance of getting premiums amounting to one hundred and fifty dollars in gold. Why! that is as good as fifty dollars per month for the three winter months. Its worth trying for any way. Another valuable feature of the offers this year is that no one who competes need fail to get something out of the several offers ; either in premiums or commissions. Johnson & Co., will send full particulars free to any person who sends tiem their address on a postal card. These premium offers are made in connection with the use of Sheridan’s Condition Powder to make hens lay. That Powder has been manu- factured and sold for over thirty years. I. 8S. Johnson & Co., 22 Custom House St., Boston, Mass., (the only makers of Sheri- dan’s Condition Powder,) will send for 59 cents, two packs of Powder: for $1.00 five packs; for $1.20 a large 2 1-41b. can, post paid; six cans for $5, express prepaid. Six cans will pay a good dividend. I. 38. Johnson & Co., will also send to anyone asking for itacopy of the best poultry magazine published, free; The paper one year and a large can of Powder for $1.50. —_— ——_*-4a>P>o-—_—_-_— Local Notices.
