A bird can build its nest, and a beaver make its dam, as, well, or nearly as well, the first time it tties,as when old and. experi- enced, If the*young ladies of thi Canada of Ours wish to know when their standing in society is fully established, let them read what Professor Fanning says on the subject :—-** The members of the geptry always manage to get their daughters presented, and it is regarded as @ patent of social rank by the latter, What on this earthly sphere is more enchantingly exclusive, than Her Majesty’s Court?’ A her every motion grace; her step ove of confidence ; her name is announced by General the Marquis of Hertferd, Lord Chamberlain ; she makes the proper courtesy to each of the Royal family ; and at the end she extends her arm slowly and gracefully for her train. There is an ‘anecdote concerning him when he was a | poor student at Hiram, teachiog his land- lady’s children in return for board: aud lodging. Having one day to lie in bed while his single suit of clothes was being darned, the peophetic laudlady reproved him for grumbling at his poverty by say- ing: ‘“ You sheuld not care about, such For many years past the Belfast Post Office has been located in the village of Hidon, which all acknowledge to be the bet yper place. Fearing the removal of the office from the village, on the resignation bf the Post Master—a few weeks ago—a petition, signed by about thirty of the most! influential electors in the disirict—of all politica: creeds—waa forwarded to Ot- tawa, humbly recommending the appoint- mentof a gentleman whe resides in the village amd who, both by his past experi- ence and geveral knewledge, al! are agreed, is eminently qualified for the office. Our wishes were entirely ignored, for, strange to say, these in authority, instead of granting our simple and just request, have appointed as Post Master, one who resides some distance from the village, in a situation not very convement to the mail courier nor the public, and who, theuch vbliging, honest and industrious, makes 1.0 pretensions to such accurate knowledge as the Postal Department requires, and who further declares that ‘‘he never asked for it ; it was shoved on him as there was no one else to take it.” oo key to all this is simply the follow- g: The former gent!eman is a Liberal, the latter a Liberal Conservative, and for this trifle which is probably a mere accident the whole communiey must suffer grievances and inconveniences to perpetuate the worst of all polieies, ‘‘ To the victors belong the spoils.” We elect our Representatives to place and power, to remove injust ire, ced ress grievances, and grant us all the iacilities and privileges of a free country, and in this instance the$ would have betier suceseded had they acceded te the wishes af a community who are endeavoring to remove the partition lines, that the rant of bigoted and narrowminéed politicians has established in the past. Trusting that this grievance will be speedily removed, and thanking yeu, Mr. Editor for your valuable space. I remain, An Oxp Tory, Eldon, Oct, 12th, 1881. To the Editar of the Eramaner. Sm,--In your isaue of the 3th. instant, appeared a communication, purporting to have been written in Charlottetown, eap- tioned ‘.Druakenness in King’s” which, in justice to the people of King’s demands a promptdenial. The writer with pardonable pride boasts of the extinguisher, put upon rum selling in the city, and laments over the amount of drunkenness he witnessed in Georgetown on the 3rd idst. By omitting te state that. the 3rd was Exhibition day, the writer leaves the public to infer that such is the case every day, and in the same adroit manner asserts that this deplorable atate Of affairs is due to the laxity of In- speetor Kearney. In subject I beg to in- form your correspondent, and others he may have misled, that the sale of spirituons liquors in Georgetown, and this County in general, is reduced to a minimum at pre- sent, and cannot be compared to that of the western Counties. It is true there were some signs of intoxication in George- town on Exhibition day, but it must not be inferred from this that drunkenness, on ordinary oceasions, is on the inerease, or even perceptible; nor is it a fact that In- spector Kearney is derelict in his duty. { am in a position to know that that offcial is leaving no stone unturned to bring offend- ers to justice, and from all | car hear he is censidsredthe right man in the right place your correspondent’s opinion te the con- trary notwithstanding. Judging from the tone of your correspondénts remarks, and the tenor of one or two other letters on the same topic, I am inclined to think that the writer must be a disappoiated candidate for Mr. Kearney’s position, who would doubtless deal summarily with him if it Iay in his power. It would, however, be more prudent for correspondeats not to inflict such a sweeping condemnation upon the inhabitants of a whole County in order to be revenged upon ono individual. Apart from the symptoms of inteimper- ance visible in Georgetown on Exhibition Day, there is scarcely such a thing as drunkenness known in King’s County. Even on that day there war hardly a man from any part of the country, drunk or sober, to he seen in the town at eight o'clock in the evening. So much for the veracity of your correspondent.
