The port of Pictou yeste rday presented the rather unusus! spectac le of two first- cas steam boats, jeaving the harbor at the game time for P. E Island. The S. S. Starl-y got under way a minute or so ahead, but was closely followed by the Northu nberland, and con s-ierable interest was ox ted amongst the passengers respecting whieh would first arrive at Charivttetown. fhe Stanley had the advantage Oo going right through any fields of floating ice that were met; but drawing iess water could bring the points closer and in this way gained a considerable advantage near Caribou. The two b vats were going very level and steady up to this the Stanley leading by about 200 yards, but shortly afterwards an accident in the engine room of this steamer com- pelied the machinery to ba stupped until repairs were effected. This to k about 15 minutes, and when the Stanley again got wader way the Northumberland wae a long distance ahead But trouble for the Northamberland was goon encowstered, a large field of ice being met to the eastward of Point Prim, through which slow progress coul! only be made. This aroused hope in the Stanley's pas sengers, and the way that steamer cut thrceugh the floating ice was admirabl >. As some of the passengers remarked, ** it was worth taking a trip to see it eg The detention of the Stanley through the accident, and the lost time caused by the ice ic the Northumber'and, pretty well equalized each cther, and when the harbor’s mouth was reached there was very lictle difference between the two. As a matter of faci, there was not over four or five minutes’ difference in their docking. Among the paesengera in the N ‘rthumbere P.C. For instance, they | do not include Mrs. Cieppins, (Miss Gertie Palmer) and her admirable character dress, or Tommy Bardell, or the junior member of the orchestra ; they are not sufticiently enlarged respecting the difficulties of Mr. Tupman’s love-making or the local hit par ex ellence, of Me. Stiggins ; they ought to have been more emphatic in praise of the excelierce of Mr. Peake’s reading ; and they ought to have referred to the fact that Miss Lucy Caven and Miss Macdonald, of the orchestra, were present ed with boquets of flowers. We apologise for these omissions. Time and space, com: bined, necessitated on the part of THe EXAMINEK a rather shorter report of the entertainment than its merits deserved. —_——_——_— ——_ - o2-ee¢e — —— Mock Tartle Chicken, pea and tomat» seups, tomato catsup, pickied olives, wine of rennet, ete, ete, just received at Geo. eurter & Co.’s, 136 Queen Street. apld 2i MWeLaren’'s Imperi«l Cream, cherse in glass jars, mince meat, toble jeliy. new canned goods, etc, jus¢ received at Geo.
