Federal, general-Provincial, by~l~`ederal and l>y~Provincial, that the atmosphere of our fair Dominion is almost constantly filled with the clamor of party strife, the echoes of party battles recently fought, or the trumpet calls to party frays in the near futon. An intelligent, fair-minded and patriotic elector attends a po`itical meeting and what does he hear? Mutual recriminations, shouts and challenges of defiance, charges of malfeasance, corrup- tion and treachery, of falsified accounts, broken pledges, favoritism incompetence, shameful neglect, waste of public moneys and needless and grievous burdens heaped upon the people. If the charges are true, then our public men are guilty not of mere misdemeanors but of public crimes. Each party, be it observed, charges the other with all the offences we have enumerated, each charges the other with the same things, while the party followers of each speaker applaud him to the echo, and if perchance “the voices of the men of Israel are louder than the voices of the men of Judah," we know that victory inclines to the faction that shouts loudest and long- est. If from the political meeting and the lucubrations of the party press we turn to the actual polling of votes, what do we find ? On the opposing sides the candi~ dates and their lieutenants, pushing, pulling, cajoling, persuading, even brib- ing with drink or money, or promise of office, or favor, the electors to sup- port the party standard-bearer and the dear party, which being in de- sires to remain in, or being not desires to get in. In all this where is the country's interest? Where is patriotism? Is not the countr'y’s best interest sacrificed, crucified between the two malefactors of opposing parties! If we can conceive an ideal State, in which true patriotism was allowed free course-"where none were for the party and all were for the State," how different things would be! Then at election times honest citizens would meet to take grave counsel together for the 'public weal,~not to listen to the mere clamor and recrimi- nation of noisy demagogues. The question at issue would not be,How can we elect our party man and secure a party victory? but, How can we best secure the welfare of the entire community? How can we best pro- vide for needed public services? How can we best guard the civil and religious lib- erties we have and lead on toward truer nobility in government, better laws and purer manners? \Vho is the wisest and most patrioticin our midst that he may be chosen a law-maker and a ruler i It is not thus that citizens take counsel together at election times, and more`s the pity. Patriotism is too often wholly for- gotten at the verymoment when it should be most in evidence.
