Yesterday afternoon the liberal members supporting the local l§o\'ci'niiient niet in the Legislative Council chninbcr for the purpose of receiving the formal resignation of Premier \\`a.rburton and also for the purpt-.~:e of noniinatirig a man whoin the retiring leader might recommend to His Honor the Lieutenant Gover- nor to form a new administration. Mr. Fairquliason was the gunanimous choit-e'ot` the party and when Mr. \\`arburton retires llonday next the fornier’sna.me will be handed in to the Lieutenant Governor. \\'e are not in a position to state the personel of the new adminstrution but it is probable that few changes will be made beyond asking Mr. Sinclair to become one of the Execu- tive. All the others will :likely be re-appointed. It is also probable that Mr. McDonald will be re-appointed Attorney-General and that Mr. Mac- Millan and Mr. McLean will retain their respective portfolios for the pre- sent. So far as we can learn the pro- ceedings at the meeting were of the most harmonious and satisfactory character. At first, it is said, that other names besides Mr.Fa.rquharson’s were suggested for the leadership. All others suggested, however, retired in Mr. Farquha.rson's favor. We congratulate Mr. Farquharson on his elevation and we believe that the fact of his appointment will give general satisfaction to the country. Mr Farquharson’s appointment will be specially gratifying to the temper- ance element in the community and that eieinent fortunately forms the large majority of the elect Jrs of the the Province. Mr. Farquharson is also a staunch economist and in these days when our finances are some what straitened the public will have the utmost confidence that in no department of the service will a dollar of public money be allowed to be wasted. The new premier lifts a dimcult task before him-to str-.tighten out and place on i satisfactory footing the .finances of this province. If he succeeds, as we ha\e confidence that he will, be will he entitled to the gratitude of all who have the future well being of the province at heart. I "¥"*""" §f)i'f(')§iAI. NOTES. The Boston Herald ,observes that the new governor-general of Canada, Earl Minto, is a. man who has won popularity in every capacity he has filled. His only weakness is said to be aquick temper that he cannot always control. Ah l a. triiie pepper- minto now and then. No intiination has been made that the bands have yet replied to the question asked by the City Council. Until this matter is explained in some way the majority of citizens will be inclined to censure the bands even though they may not merit it. If any explanation can be given why is it not forthcoming. Some American papers are of the opinion that no further punishment will be imposed upon the war corres- poudent,Scovel, than that of sending him away from Cuba.. This is rather mild punishment for slapping a. gen- eral‘s face. It may be,however, that he did not slap Gen. Sha.t`ter’s face. The general himself, in his account of the affair, speaks only of Scovel’s striking at him, which was bad enough, but not so bad an offence as that at first represented. =il%%%%%% %%%%%%% |1"s The come back again trade that pays bore It’s the repeat orders, it’s the “as befos. orders” from our out of town customeit It’s being able to sell better furniture a lower prices than others, which has made our business grow so ' T THE Suoslsrs ~....... The course pursued by this 1 young inan cannot be too highly commended and should be followed by hundreds of boys throughout- the province. The time has arrived when a. farmer must understand his busi- iness. Our: most successful men now agree that a special training is re~ _quired for this profession equally as l, much as for any other. The trend of the time was once to ignore this noble calling and to follow what is wrongly called the higher professions of life. But happily another era. is dawning upon us and the successful agricultu- rist or horticulturist is now looked upon as a man of intellect, one capa- ble of taking his stand on all leading questions of the day, a man of power in the community. Let more of the young men remain tillers of the soil, skilled in this then special pursuit. The cities are over- crowded. The other professions are over crowded but in agriculture is a. field almost limitless in its resources. Socrates, the wisest philosopher of antiquity, said :-“Agricultureois an employment the most worthy of the application of man ; the most ancient and the most suitable to his nature. It is the common nurse of all persons in every age and condition of life; it is the source of health, strength, plenty .and riches and of a thou sanu sober de- lights and honestlpleasures. It- is the mistress and school of sobriety, tem- perance, justice, religion, and, in short, of all virtues, civil and military." “And from a. moral point of view,” Lord Russell rernarks,"‘the life of the agriculturist is the most pure and holy of any class of men.” _.___,_M _ INEBRIETY is A Disease -Parties can be cured at the KEELEY INSTITUTE, Portland, Maine of Alcoholism, Morph nism.
