It was owing to: ] suggestion by Mr. Warrer that tb { chief character in the tale was call: Colonel Eschol Sellers, and it is a fa that the man whose name was taken—i man supposed to be long dead—made i fiery demand for satisfaction, visiting Bartford for that purpose. Dwarfs and Polson, Henry M. Stanley, fn describing his journey thongh the forests of Africa, says that the most formidable foes he eucountered, those that oaused the greatest loss of life to bis caravan and camo nearest to defeating bis expedi tion, were the Wambutti dwarfs. These diminutive men had only bows and arrows for weapons, so small that they looked like children’s playthings, but upon the tipof each tiny arrow wat a drop of poison which would kill an elephant or a man as surely and quickly as a rifle. Their defense was by means of poison and traps. They would steal through the dense forest, and waiting in ambush let fly their arrows before they could be dis- coverel. They dug ditches and carefully covered them over with sticks and Jeaves. They fixed spikes in the ground and tipped them with poison. Into these ditches and on these spikes man and beast would fall or step to their death. One of the strangest things about it was that their poison was mixed with honey. “Sinall Cap.” Shafter. **Pecos Bill is not the only nickname ¢hat General Shafter ever enjoyed,’’ said qu old newspaper man the other day. “Ont in Denver be was known for years as ‘Small Cap Shafter,’ and as he is anything but small the title calls for an explanation. It seems that a banquet of some sort had been given toa lot of army officers, and among the guests was General, then Colone!, taafter. Theold Denver Tribune pricted an account of the affair, and a list of those present was included in the article. ‘*When the proofs were examined be- fore the paper was made up, it was ob- served thut Shafter’s initials were in lower case type, and the proofreader promptly marked them ‘small cap.,’ meaning that they should be reset in capitals of a small size. The intelligent compositor supposed that the inscription ‘ndicated some military title with which he was unfamiliar, and instead of mak- \wog the proper correction substituted ‘Small Cap. Shafter,’ and thus it ap- peared on che following morning. **Pecos Bill was mad enough to bite nails when he saw the paper, but every- body else roared, and the title stuck to him until the yarn was gradually for- gotten. it is still remembered, bowever, by plenty of old timtz:. * ————— a --- URE rneamatizm by taking Hood’s Sarsaparilla, which by neu- tralizing the acid in the blood perma- uently reliexes aches and PAINS, nw gy os ak dbname STOP IT NOW!
