We left the wharf at Hali-
fax Sabbath morning aboard the Em-
press of Britain. a sistership of the
Empress of Ireland that was sunk a
year or so‘ago.- A _battle cruiser, and
the S. S. Lapland came over with us.
-and _there were soldiers aboard the
Lapland, too. I don't know how many
we were on had over four thousand
soldiers, besides the crew. The boys
were all looking pretty sober, for we
knew we-had a _dangerous trip, until
we met the submarine destroyers. We
day out, we met the S. S. Olympic on
her way to Halifax, ands. Norwegian
bark going-to New Y_ork, these were
the only ones we saw until we got
near this side. After we crossed _the
_Grand Banks we passed a little south
of where the Titanic went down. After

camp. We had physical drill in the
moming, and' had little or nothing to
do after that, except fall in at 10
o'c1ock for, grand rounds. We had to
take our turn on watch guard with
,machine gulls on deck, ready for action
in. case of any submarines showing up(
The 19th was about the only rough day
we had, and it wasn’t much. The boat
'traveledat only half speed until we
‘got in the danger -zone, then she trav-
;eled much faster, at* night going nearly
_twenty note. Sabbath evening, the
22nd, we met :the submarine destroy-
ers, and tllQy,_can-'more than travel

they were just visible on the horizon,
‘and in less than fifteen minutes they
