Thr Superior Court in Chicago has awarded $7000 to one Frank V Balling for injuries thus received. He had an ankle injured by being thrown from a buggy. A skiagraph was taken to show the nature of the hurt, and this is alleged to have caused decomposition to set in. Sev- eral amputations were necessary to save the pa.tient’s life. Some one with a taste for romance started the report that some Irishmen n South Africa and New York were willing to assist President Kruger in the event of war with Britain. Should they do so they will find other Irish- men there well prepared to support the old flag of the United Kingdom. There are now in South Africa or under orders to go thither seven bat- talions of Irish infantry and one regiment of Irish cavalry, numbering altogether about 8.500 men. Ontario is obtaining an unenviable reputation for electoral corruption. The latest revelation comes from the election trial in North Waterloo, where it appears that the price of votes at the last contest ranged from $2 to $10, $25 and even $50 a piece. Two electors appear by the evidence to have each received the last named sum in consideration for deserting the party which they respectively favored. When will the conscience of the country be aroused to punish bribers and the bribed as they de- serve? The corruption revealed by recent election trials is a shame and a disgrace to Canada. The late Cornelius Vanderbilt, whose death by paralysis is an- nounced, was yet in the prime of life. He was in his 56th year. He is des- cribed as a man who had few amuse- ments and no hobbies. He belonged to the Protestant Epscopal church, and devoted much_time to church and Sunday school interests. He was a hard worker from early youth down to the time of his death. Mr. Vander- millionaires, and will be favorably remembered by those with whom he was associated in life. His death re- sulted from a second stroke of paraly- sis, the first stroke having befallen him in 1896. Another instance of the defective telegraph system of this province has occurred- On Tuesday evening a tele- gram was sent from Great Village N. S. to Charlottetown announcing the death of Rev. J. Johnson and asking Mr. Holbrook to go on to meet the bridy on Wednesday morning. The telegraph ofiice had closed in Char- lottetown as usual at eight o’clock and the telegram did not reach this city until the Picton boat was en route to Picton the following morn- ing. In consequence of the delay it was Thursday morning before an escort for the body could leave Char- lottetown, and the body only arrived last night, twenty-four hours later than it would if we had a night tele- lgraph service.
