THE Curious Breach of Promise Suit. A YOUNG WOMAN 4 YOUNG MAN FOR RREACH OF PROMISE, AND THE YOUNG MANS TWIN BROTHER SWEARS IT WAS HE rHAT MADE LOVE TO THE PLAINTIFF AND NOT HIS BROTHER. SUES A curious breach of promise suit is that of Miss Lizzie Margolin against Abraham Gitlin, in New York. Miss Margolin asks the court to award her $10,000. The girl is a pretty brunette of 17. She says she was introduced to Abraham in March last. | The young man was good looking, and had bright prospects In her complaint she | says: ** He expressed his love for me, and 7 ; ee said he would make me hia wite. rhe young couple maintained the friendliest relations for cver six months, The defen- dant’s lawyers produced an aftidavit of Hyman Gitlin, the twin brother of the defendant, in which he swears that it was he who was introduced to the pretty young woman, that he courted her and proposed marriage. In his affidavit he says that it was he, not his brother, who presented Miss Margolin with an engagement ring and other costly gifts, and that he hired and furnished apartments tor the use of the girl and her mother. The. brothers are 22 years of age, of the same build and height, and both have dark hair and wear 4 dark moustache. They are as alike as pets in a pod. The case is still pending. em ae aa ————— A Very Uncommon Case. & YOUNG WOMAN BREAKS HER NECK AND LIVES. Miss Edith Phelps, daughter of Mr. Jas. Phelps, of Sidney, N. Y., who, in common but unprofessional phrase, ** broke her neck” a few days ago, bids fair to recover. The facts of this most remarkable case are | that when Miss Edith attempted to rase a window sash, which was caught fast by ice that had gathered at the sill, the obstiuc tion suddenly gave way, permitting her head to tly back with a violent jerk that dis- located the vertebre of the neck. Her head, no longer sustained by the neck, dropped down on the right shoulder The surgeon who was called to attend her suc- ceeded in reducing the dislocation, and then adjusted around the neck a stout pasteboard collar, as it may be termed, as an artilicial support for the head in ‘its natural position. It is believed that in the course of several mouths she will entirely recover without any deformity. So far she has suffered no great paiu. Surgeons say that injuries of the nature indicated, followed by perfect recovery, without deformity, are extremely rare ip + Vancouver Water Works. The city of Vancouver, B. C., is soon to have a high pressure water system, with a supply derived from the river Capilano, a precipitous stream taking its rise im the snow-capped mountains of the Coast Range of British Columbia. A submerged water main, 1,100 feet in length, with flexible joints, has been laid across Burrard inlet, being part of the main line of the Vancouver water works. fhe manner of laying and appliances were somewhat novel. A skidway of fir logs was built in a trench on the shore, reaching 1,200 feet back from the water's edge. The whole line of 1,100 feet was then made up on the skidway with the Ward flexible sockets. Three cables were then attached, me at each end and one at the middle, the forward and middle cables being carried across the stream and attached to the drums of separate engines. The cable from the rear end was attached to an engine dram at the water's edge, on the same side of the stream, and floats were provided for par- tially buoying the pipe, and lashed to it as it entered the water. TS i OO Underpinning of Houses. The walls under houses and barn base- ments, if they have been built several yeira, always need some attention on the spproach of winter. Our climate, so moist in fali, and so cold in winter, makes sad havoc with walls. Mortar being largely composed of lime, readily absorbs damp- ness, and freezing when moist disintegrates a s fresh mortar and a few hours’ work with the trowel will save the ingress vi much cold every winter. Piles! Piles! Itching }Piies! Symproms.— Moisture; intense itching and stinging; moist at night; worse by scratching. lf allowed to continue tumors form, which viten bleed and ulcerate, becoming very sore. SwayNe's OINTMENT stops the itching and bleeding, heals ulcerations, and in most cases remove the tumors. All druggists, or by nail, for 50 cents. Dr. Swayne & Son, Phila- delphi 4 octl2 bm dw ei Tae A few days ago. Mr. Gorby, M. P., in- troduced to the Ministers of Finance and Customs a delegation of cheese manufac- turers, consisting of Messrs. Whitton, of Rodden; Bird, of Sterling; Brentnell, of Thurlow, and McCargar, of Belleville. These gentlemen have commenced the manufacture of extract of rennet, an article used in cheese making, and they desire the Government to make this commodity duti- able, it being at present on the free list. They represented that the imported article, which they have hitherto obtained from Germany and the United States, is of an inferior character, being adulterated, and that in order to secure the pure article they have been compelled to manufacture it little | in the vicinity of Charlottetown, | tawue Bridge and Murray } will pay $50 to any person *% DAILY $50 REWARD. —— \ misdemeanor, punishable term not exceeding two years; commit such offence is punishable, by imprisonment for é every attem) te on summary recently cut EXAMINER, - - wenaae offer for sale the Schooner ‘J ESSLE : NEWELL,” of Barrington, built in | 3 63 tons, well found in every | ALICIOUSLY cutting, breaking. destroving or injuring Telephone Lines or Wires is a and AD RE AT Schooner For Sale.
