Tull "Ya" of Kensington held a` social in their room on Tuesday evening, in the form ofa farewell to Brune Bernard, an honorary member, who' intends leavihtl shortly for Halifax. A short program con- aisi ing of dialogues, readings and music was well rendered. A new member was iultated, and the President in a few words expressing the regret of the “Ya” at his depnrru'e presented Bruce with a "Y" pin. G-ike and coffee were aerved, and a pleasant evening was brought to an end by singing, “God be with you till we meet again." _ A REGULAR meeting of the Police Re- lief and Aid S iciety was held Tuesday afternoon, at which the usual routine business was transacted. The associa- tion has received from Capt Melllsh, of P E Island, n contribution of five dollars tc their funds. In a letter aocornpanyiniz the donation Capt Mellish raid he wished to thank Cnlef of Police Clark and all his otllcers for the courteous treatment he received at their hands while in the city recently in connection with the Mc- Kinnon-Molmughlin Carriage Co case.- St John Sun THE fourth annual meeting oi tha Canadian Association for the prevention nf Consumption and other forms of tuberculosis wits a very interestinu gathering. The disease is aaid to cause one eighth of therleaths in this country, and from 30,000 to 40,000 persons are suffering from it. The field is not only lm-gn, but encm-aging, for the disease ‘is pr:-veniihle and its earlier stages curable. Fm-more will he specially interested in the question dlstufsed by Dr. Ravenal of the Henry Phipps Institute, of Philadel- phia. The doctor lnsisiel on the identity of human and bovine tuberculosis, and said that in the experience of niunv years he had not found any animals immune from tuberculosis. Though the chief cause of infection is inhalation, 25 per cent. of children‘a cases can be traced to food, especially milk and meat. His moral was the necessity of precaution against infection from animalf. The chief m»seage the convention sends out is “Live as much as possible ln the open air." Overcrowding, bad ventilation, dark dirty rooms, had or insufficient food, dissipation or anything that enfeebles the constitution and impairs its powers of resistance are to be avoided. This raises a broad question; for it means that the fight against consumption is part of tho fight against poverty, ignorance and misery. As to treatment the convention recom- menda the fresh air sanitarium, where patients may have the best. care without losing touch with their friends and family physicians. “Every patient who is cured in the sanitarlum becomes an apostle of the gospel of fresh air." It ia pointed out that the Nova Scotia government has just erected a saritariurn at Kentvllle, with capacity for 16 patients. There are in Canada only four other auch institutions, ‘and the total accommodation is only about sixteen beds. There is evidently much to he done.-Exchange. ___.__1-1-~ Brltish Cough Cure-This is a prepara- tion that has gained a reputation on its merits.
