Most gains were fractional. A fav- ored few, though, advanced 1 to around 3 points, most of them on larger turnover than usual and somrestabiishing new 1949 highs. Today's rise broke a losing streak in erfect all this week. Several issues were tripped up by unfavorable corporate news, includ- ing Bendix Home Appliances and Magnavox. ' Turnover of 760,090 shares was some improvement over yesterday's, 670,000 but still not enough to al- low brokers to plan for early re- tirement. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks advanced .2 of one point to 63.4. The industrial component showed the widest swing, with rails and utilities trailing along. Of the 932 individual issues which appeared on the ticker tape, 425 ad- vanced and 270 slipped. Stocks which reached new highs for the year included Bigeiow-San- ford at 30 3-4. Foster Wheeler 26 1-2, N. Y. Shipbuilding 19 1-4, Mont- gomery Ward 57 1-2, and Douglas Aircraft 58 3-8. At Montreal MONTREAL, March 17—- (CF)- Trading was at a stand till on the Montreal stock exchan e and curb market today and losses continued to edge out gains _ despite a last- minute rally by a few leading in- dustrials. Base metals were slowly recuper- ating from recent heavy losses after leading the downturn. Banks and senior oils were soft, but- papers, utilities, western oils and steels stopped an earlier downturn and strengthened near the close of trad- ing. , Closing averages. indicated banks down .21 at a new low of 27.09; golds off .11, papers off .04 and in- dustrlals off .3 while utilities gain- ed .1. Of 167 issues traded, 44 were im- proveli,'53 onsier and 70 unchang- ed. Three new highs and 19 new lows were established. Industrial turnover was approxi- mately 23.100 shares against 29,260 the previous session. Mining sales were more active with a total turn- over of 151,500 shares against Wed- nesday's 137,000. Consolidated Smelters touched a new low of 96 1-4 in Ioronoon deal- ings following news that lenri pric- es would be cut down by 1 1-2 cents to 17.25 cents a pound. The issues. however, closed unchanged from Wednesday at 97 1-2. ' At Toronto TORONTO, March 17 —- (CF)- Prlces halted two sessions of steady decline on the Toronto stock ex- change ioday. Base metals recover- ed their equilibrium since dipping to the lowest levels in 11 months as several key issues forged" upwards on narrow advances. Consolidated Srnoltirlg featured an otherwise dull market. The stock touched a new low at $96 but went Into a recovery movement, climb- ing to $97.75, down 25 cents from yesterday's close. Other base met- al stocks moved into the gain col- umn. Walte Amulet, Noranrla, East Sullivan and Steep Rock were among the better gainers." Senior gold producers 'were up fractions while a handful of Juniors showed gains ranging up to five cents. Trading was light. Key western oils showed strong gains. Calgary and Edmonton rose 25 cents at $4.80 and Anglo-Cana- dian was up 15 cents at $4. Royal- ltc, ahead in early dealings, weak- ened.
