DEATH OF FATHER AND SON.- A double bereavement fell upon the home of Alexander C. McPhail this week. On Monday last s telegram was received announcing the death of his eldest son, Charles, in Boston. Mr. McPhail'waB, at the time, so ill that it was thought best to withhold from him the news of his s0n's death. The fatllelf ilhased away on ‘Christmas morning. A remarkable incident con- nected v.‘ith.his 'death wtas the fact that, although not informed of his s0n’s death. he told one of those wat- ching bv his bedside, shortly- before Passing HWHY. “Charlie is dead." The elder Mr. McPhai1 was in his 86th Year and is survived by his widow and a’ large family of sons and dau- ghters, two of the sons, James and Goodwill residing at home. He was an exemplary Christian, a kind and devoted husband and father and a man whose honesty and uprightness, kindness and courtesy, made him a favorite with all who knew him. His son, Charles, above referred to, was 44 years of age and leaves an only dau- ghter, Margaret, his wife having pre- deceased him by some twelve years. To the aged- widow and mother so sadly bereaved of husband and scn, and to the other bereaved relatives The* Guardian tenders sincere sym- pathy. Arrangements for the funeral are postponed pending word from ab- sent inernb_ei;s,0f the family, __ _ HOCKEY.- According to a Halifax exchange of Dec. 21., the Evening News says:-Chester Greggory, play- ing manager of the New Glasgow hockey team has arrived from Syd- ney, and was this morning interview- ed by a representative of the Even- _ _ 2 'Y J ,___ if 'T " l"" ? 5 (FV gilgbwg Rf Y .., _ lllckeyf& Nicholson Tobacco Co. ltd. ;Y0UR BILL I 1. °~‘ _ _ » so i -e / ...'57 _ _ ,-1, s t _ _.___1,7:,____,__.,,,.,_,=.,-__ get a great deal more coin ,.` ,md v,,,‘,;..,_,>,_0,.e\.e,.y ,,,,,@ful-, Try it and prove lt. "What about this bribery talk, Gregory?" the News asked. “We11_" replied Gregory, “Manager Isnor of the Socials called me up and said he would guarantee me $150 a game when New Glasgow went to Halifax. “I then asked him what he would do for Moncton, and he re`- plied ‘I would not give Moncton their feed,’ and related that he could have a nice league without Moncton. I told Mr. Isnor that I would not con- sider his Droposal for a moment., even if he were to pay me $1,000 a game. I also told him that I would stay in .thei league with Mfoncton. I thcn called up Moncton and told Mr. Taylor confidentially my conversa- tion with Manager Isnor, but I had no idea that it would get in the pa- pers. I at once wired to Mr. Lith- gow, stating that I was prepared to back up my statement. I also wired Mr. Isnor to the effect that if he did not want the facts of the case made public he had better sea Mr- Lil-ll' gow. If be wants the investigation, I'm ready to back up what I have said. It’s I-lalifax’s move next.‘As for New Glasgow's team in the lea- gue, little can be learned.
