Dr. Biendmann professes to have dis eovered that the telescopic observations irradiates from the lunar disk, which prevents an exact examination of the surface. Dr. Blendmann softened the light by using the condensed light of camp- hor. Hes had to make hundreds of trials before finding the exact measure of seftening reqnired to obtain a_ perfect | image of the moon. He then toek with a reflecting telescope a light that + the disk of the moon, which he afterward exposed under a powerful solar microscope. The circle obtained in the photograph had in the microscope an apparent diameter of over thirty-three feet. In this way the stery is, he was able to perceive that what have been believed to be seas are really regions covered with rich vegetation, and what have always been taking for mountainous regions are deserts and seas. Une can see, the latter says, with striking disinciness, cities, towns, aud villages, and there are strong indigations of industry and commerce. Speaking generally, it is not to the labor | af ate ry of the chemist that we should go for | our potash salts, but to the laboratory of | nature, and more especially to that of the vegetable kingdom. They exist in the green parts of all vegetables. This is il lustrated by the manufacture of com- mercial potash from the ashes of the twigs and leaves of timber-trees. The more icenlent the vegetable the greater the untity of potash it contains, thongh there are seme minnr exceptions to this. As I have already stated, we extract and waste preportion sf these salts when we boil vegetables and throw away the potage, which our wise aud more thrifty neighbors add to their every day men When we eat raw vegetables, as in salads, we obtain all their potash. Fruits generally contain important quantities of potash salts, and it is upon these especially taat the possible victims of lithic acid should rely. Lemons and grapes contain them most abundantly. Those who cannot afford to buy these as articles of daily food 22 1 a considerable may use cream of tartar, which, when geauine, is the natural sa!t of the grape, thrown down in the manner I shail de- scribe when on the subject of the cookery of wines. a CURRENT NOTES.
