Wodehouse of Ottawa, Executive secretary of the Canadian Tuberculosis Association, was the reference to "Daddy Allan" of Inter- crippled children. _ The Ottawa Rotary Club under a » _ E ` ' A' national ' Rotary 'fame in aid of amount' each year on the birthday feature was the small number of crippled children, owing to tubercu- losis. This no doubt was so in‘Ot- tawa because the city milk supply was received from cattle proven free from tuberculosis and for a number of years milk has all been pastcur- izcti. This happy state of affairs will lsoon be applicable to this Island ow- iing to the completion of the work tin making a tuberculosis free area ‘for cattle and the limitation of the spread from human beings by treat- Ling the adult cases in a sanatorium iiiiiout to be constructed. | We try to practise the prevention of tuberculosis by every known nie- thod; a medical school inspector un- der the Red- Cross in this province; cxaminationol children from homes lmvini; tuberculosis; by the travell- ing chest clinic and by many other means, but the crippled children committee of the Rotary Club in Ot- tawa .unintentionally did a greater effort in preventive medicine by hav- ing the names of all crippled child- ren, and therefore all the victims _,of infantile paralysis were known in itheir record. Last year when an epi- demic ofthe disease swept Ottawa and they wanted to get blood serum ,from recovered cases to treat the new victims, thc Rotary Club mem- bers personally visited those boys and girls whom they now knew and whose confidence they enjoyed, and got them to volunteer to givg all thc blood necessary to meet the demand in the Ottawa district, and even to send for the assistance of children |in other cities. By this one practise *more than 150 to 200 children were prevented from developing the re- sulting paralysis which is usually left in train of an epidemic of this disease as a very sad reminder' of its visitation. It is‘for this 'and similar exper- *“' small beginning collected a small _ of 'each member for an initiation C fund for 'crippled children. Tha latest addition which has been made ia I Secretary to the Health Officer. 'ltis hoped in the near future to enlarge the personnel of the Health Department by bringing in .additional financial assistance _from outside the province. The aditionnl I funds will be avaliable as soon an the present public_ health ageriy fa consolidated and we have a. program to submit, to the Government to make this possible without spending any.'addltio’nal money. You may not realize at the present ,time over til,- 000 is being spent for public health purposes in the province and wo,quite expect by re-organization of all' par- ties interested. to agree to at least increase this to $25,000 and thus bring the work here up to the name standard as that being developed in the province _of Quebec under the approval and concurrence of the Federal Department of Health. The guests were Dr. A. P. Greel- man, Provincial Health Officer. Miss Ina. Gillian, of the local Red Cross, also the following members of the Orpheus Eight and Orchestra (who took part in the presentation of I “Whoa," under the auspices of the Rotary Club in aid of crippled child- ,rchlz Dr. T. E. E Robins, Arthur » G. Bruce, Elmer Dunning, Ben Acorn, Jack stems and Leigh Ding- well, Miss Roberta Spencer, musical leader of the Orpheus Eight, Miss Kathleen Hornby, leader of the or- chestra, Miss Eleanor Homby, W. A. Gaudet and C. J. Mitchell. President MacMillan announced that "Whoa" had been a great suc- cess financially as well as from an entertainment standpoint, the net receipts being $523.57. He had also received a cheque for $50, from a party who did not wish the name given. This made a total of $573.57. Mr. MacMillan then handed a cheque for this amount to Miss Gil- lan to be applied to the Crlppled Children Fund. Miss Gillan on behalf of the Red .Cross expressed her thanks for the magnificent contribution, and spoke of the valuable assistance given from time to time to the crippled children work by the R.otarians. At the close of the meeting addi- tional anonymous donations brought ‘the grand total contribution to the Rotary crippled Childrcn`s Fund to _$6l3.43. this amount being handed fover to Miss Gillian of the Red Cross.
