Dr. J. A, Mann, pastor of the Clinton Avenue Baptist Church, returns from his vacation he will find the church and fence sur- rounding it brigut with new paiat. The Congregation is not a wealthy one, ard a few weeks ago when it was proposed to paint the property the men of the ehurch offered to look atter the building if the women would take care of the fence, which is nearly 390 feet long. The offer was accepied. The building was painted two weeks ago, and the men began to think that the women intended to back out of he agreement. On Friday Mrs. Iarael Billingham, Misses Flora, Edith and Lizzie Roott, Ger- trude and Annie Stone, Meta Milleite, Mrs. William Rapier, Mrs. George Mallette and Mrs. Rebecca Seilner appearefl, clad in Calico dresses aod sun bonnets and armed with paint pots and brushee, A preity shade of ealmon had bees mixéd for them Ly a professional painter | aod they began to put ii on. They all say that the fence would look prettier if they Lad mixed the paint themselves, but as they could not agree on the color they decided to engage a painter as arbitrator aod mixer. The work was finished Wednesday. While it was in progress the strange sight attracted many spectators. Some of them praised the painters. Others criticised them for not employing men when so many are out Of work. One of the critics was a welltodo member of the congregation whodeparted hastily when one of the painters stopped work long enough to teli bim that if he contributed more liberal}y the congregation could afford to pay for the work. When the job was finished the painters | Were treated to pound cake by Mrs. Henry Plister who has a kakery opposite the church, a LOCAL NOTICES, —_— Tke Connolly sale near tne Esplanade will be an attraction tomorrow for all ladies.
