THE well known trotting sf allion Black
Pilot, the sire of many speedy horses in
the province, is now owned in Moncton
by Ezekiel Steeves, who purchased him
recently from Nova Scotia parties. Black
Pilot was rais d on P. E. Island and be-
came famous when he defeated Hernando
in a match race for $5(l) a side at Sum-
mersidr, seventeen years ago. Pilot is
some ofthe beauty he `possessrd in his
prime. The Pilot-Hernando race still
lives in the memory of Islanders, many of
whom refer to it as the greatest horse
race the island ever saw or is likely to see
again. It was not so much noted for the
past rime, although 2 29, was very fast
for those days, as it was for the rivalry
that existed between the friends ofthe
two horses, one of which was owned in
