HINTS TO WOMEN. BY MRI. I. B. OLIASON. Vassautm geodcareof tlteold ladies.forwe shall never have any more, said a shrewd physician of mrncqaalstaaco. Within the last century, the general rays of science and religion, have shonsatsrs and MD" on wotoan’s path- wnyt and before their rising light, length and strength of days have led "lilte the toortting cloud and early II When the notion was, that all the knowledge ofgco- grnphy she needed, was to know the rooms in her house; and oi chemistry, to be able to coolt well a meal of vic- flllll Ithcn plain fair. and unremitting toil, where here; than we had blooming wives, healthy mothers, and thriv- ing children. Now, with lem lnholt‘. lens anxious concern for daily sustenance, and more leisure lbr literary pursuit.-s. the rose-tint has faded from her cheek, save share an arti- ficial bloom has been imparted by the aid of rough and carmine—the clear complexion has grown ssllow, and mast new be nhltsaed or whitewashed witlt foreign pow- Ilnf. and tho temporary stimulus or too, ends" ‘Drill: bil- tcrs, and lsIl|cI’s<!uI|ics, together with plasters, braces, "ll "'PP°"|'". furnish a poor substitute for her former native strength. - To my mind, the solution of this stritnge enigma is this: We are in the transition stage front IIIIS reign of nature to that of art. The prontptings of instinct guide the Illtliitn women; and I were tlm mothers of the last century guitled in the rare ofthcmselves and in the tearing of tlteir oflsprtng. Now, amid the conftmion and clamor which the new rule. of civilisation, lhshioa, and gootility impose, the voice of aaerriug instinct is unheedod. With all our science. en- lightened intelligence, and refinement, we have not ar- rived, in our physical habits, to the conscious of unfail- ing instinct. An ignorant mother, in the state of nature, will generally bestow on her child a good constitution; but in proportion as the elqancias of civilaatiom super- cotle the simplicity of nature, just in that proportion do we fl t'h‘e‘:i.ght of science to counteract the tendency of “'91 IIOIII. Now. nu. so s people. have passed the period of“IIIsp- py ignorance.” and are at that point where neither nature nor enlightened reason, guide us in our habits healtltwise; hence, to say nothing of the men, we have sicItly,ear|y- faded women. and pony, pccvish children. The prevailing inquiry. in reference to mice of diet, drms, exercise and eqtiipnge, bas been, not what is health- ful, but what isfachioaabls. When the table is spread the query is not what will digest well in the stomach, but what will please the palate. When a garment is to be made, the question which arises has reference to the pre- sent style, and not to comfort or convenience. For em- ployrnsnt we seek to do that which is considered genteel, often to the neglect ofthat which would he invigoratieo to oursclvesormahs no useful to others. Some ofour young Iadim with n "finished education,” pride themselves on their inability to perform any useful labour. The result of this is, that most of the reliable feminine bone, muscle, and slnew, in our cities and larger towns, is to he found among the more gross foreign popttlnlinn Much as we pride ourselves on our superiority, lightly s we estimate their strength, we are many of us literally their dependants. Nature and revelation IFIGII me great doctrine of universal brotherhood; yea, and " ' ‘ ‘ This much despied class are, in a great degree. wlins circumstance have made them, and we should not only deal with theta Ititttlly ,but also learn lrotn them the worth of muscular power, and how it may be retained or regained. In their native ho is the old world, where, the " lower class," the iron hand of both poverty and oppres- sion rests heavily, how could they rise In intelligence and relnsmsnt. Their legacy is large bone and strong sisewe, which when imported to tltis country week we- men, shoulal be considered a rich endowment, and would be if combined with suficient refinement and mental and moral power to ensure respect. I-Iere, under our free institutions, with the abundant facilities for spiritual, intellectual, and social culture, proflhred us on every hand, our girls haven most pitifully one-sided education. Little care is bestowed to ensure- strength of hotly, the great effort being to impart ralloe- mont of mind and manners. Ifwe could have well-disciplined minds. and rightly- developerl hearts combined with strong hands, how much more eficient would be the plans and labours ofthe wine and good. Many of our heat-educated women laclt the physical power to rnnlta the healthful. intlelibie impres- sion on the world which they would otherwise effect. They are like a ship at sea, with a valuable cargo on board, but without strength to resist winds and waves, and bring their treasures snfrly into port. So our most promising wives sink under the cares and lal-ours which maternity brings. and the grave covers them while they are, or should be, in the bloom of womanhootl; or the islrmiriee of the M extinguish the light and life of the mivit, so Ihat they are measurable dead while they yet lire.
