Bonshaw Interests Threatened The people of Banshaw have received scant consideration from Liberal governments in the matter of road improvements or railway accom- modation. They are now threatened with losing their water route, as a result of repairs to the West River Bridge which the Provincial Gov- ernment has under operation. The draw in this bridge, which has been in use since the con- struction of the edifice many years ago, is, we understand, to be closed, and a permanent span substituted. If this plati goes through it will result in disaster to the trade of a large section of the country which is witliotit railway or national highway accommodation. It would mean a com- plete shutting out of all water freight traffic, and render thousands of dollars’ worth of prop- erty, private and government owned, a total loss. For soine thirty years this water route \vas regarded as of sufficient importance to justify an aiitiiial government grant of $500 to a packet service. When the Emperor lay dying in St. Helena it was the name of NEY that he coupled with JOSEPHINE in his last feverish whispers. And so long as men love heroism the Story of Nev covering NAPoi.soN’s terrible re- treat from Moscow, personally marching in the tattered, broken ranks with musket and bayonet, will endure. The last to cross the frontier, he found himself in a small inn, and when asked who or what he was, replied with the old, death- less spirit: “I am the rear-guard of the Grand Army of the Emperor.” It would be a remarkable last chapter to his extraordinary story could it be established now that, instead of dying before ii Paris firing squad, Nev spent his last years as a school teacher on this continent. The Charlottetown and draw-bridge required, it is understood, is for motor launch traffic only and could be restored at comparatively little expense. A Road Courtesy Campaign A newspaper campaign which the Ontario Department of Highways has launched with the purpose of bringing about some reduction in the appalling number of motor accidents in the pro- vince deals neither with the law nor with the sta- tistics on the subject. It makes an earnest ap- peal for courtesy and unselfish consideration be- tween motorists, “\\'e believe." says Hon. T. B. .\lcQL'r.sTiz.\', Miiiistcr of Highways, “that if we can foster and develop the true spirit of courtesy on the road, motorist's behaviour will just naturally become better and safer." - Mr. .\lc‘QL'i5sri-‘.N is unquestionably right, on this point, Courtesy is a habit which grows. In a sense it may be described as c0iitagl0uS- The deliberate practice of it by a few will lead even many dangerous drivers to follow their example. Many othenprescriptions to reduce fatalities have been tried with little effect. It is worth while to give courtesy a fair trial. The slogan for the campaign is “Try Courtesy." It deserves to be given Canada-wide circulation. Courtesy - on the roads and highways is not hard to try. It will not only add to the pleasures of motoring. It should also reduce the hazards of the road. I A Menace To Sheep ..o-9 Iimely emphasis is placed by Hon. W.’ H. DENNIS, Minister of Agriculture, on the serious losses occasioned in different sections of the Province by sheep-killing dogs. In one locality, thirty-five sheep are reported to h3V¢ bee“ killed in one night; in another settlement a week later twenty—five were killed, and smaller num- bers have been killed in other sections. So ser- ious has the situation become that the Minister has arranged to have the R.C.M.P. carry fire- . arms to shoot. in accordance with the law, all ...,.... o- .. ..... dogs found off their masters’ premises in future. In New Brunswick, Mr. DENNIS Holes, 31¢ press is advocating the destruction of all police dogs and cross breeds of same, on account of the destruction they are causing to deer and domestic flocks. The shooting of dogs is not I liloasallt l39l< for the police, but dog owners in this case have the remedy in their own hands. They must_be kept off other people’: premises. In the city. destruction by stray dogs _is largely confined to gardens. In rural districts whefg Wh0l¢S8l¢ slaughtering of sheep has been gninglolly ll"? case is more serious, and warrants drastic action being taken. The British Gov- ernment have at length concluded it is unsafe to put one's trust in princes, whether they be of royal blood or merely self-elected dictators. 3K 5K 9K Mr. Hi=.NRv _C. WILFRED GAGNON, Minister of Trade and Commerce de- clares : “Some members may fall and take ad- vantage of their political oflice to enrich them- selves. These, I say, should be punished and Mr. Gonsour has promised that all such found will be punished. The Government of Mr. Gonaour will be a strictly business administration." The annual convention of the Women's Institutes is always an event of public interest and importance. This year's convention opens this morning in the Prince of Wales College hall, and will continue today and tomorrow. It will be the duty of a Government representative to welcome the delegates. The occasion would seem to be timely for an explanation of the Government's action in connection with the ap- pointment of a successor to Miss MACMILLAN. From Windsor Castle last week the King motored to Burhill, Surrey, to receive the 5o,ooo pounds ($250,000) model house built by the Royal Warrant Holders Association as a jub- ilee gift to King GEORGE V, who died before its completion. "The King's House," as the build- ing is known, overlooks the Surrey hills with a distant vista of Sussex. The choice of a tenant for the house is a matter for the King's discre- tion. He has not made his decision. The privil- eged tenant will receive an endowment fund for the upkeep of the house. X X X The need for effective co-operative market- ing was never more apparent than during the past few years. Outstanding in this connection has been the work of the Prince Edward Island Co-operative Livestock Marketing Board, which holds its annual meeting tomorrow afternoon in Queen Square School hall. Upward! of 4,000 farmers are being supplied with marketing serv- ice through this organization, and it is expected that a large attendance of shipping club delegates and patrons will be present at tomorrow’: meeting.
