Can I forget that winter night In eighteen eighty-four, When Nellie, charmirg little sprite, Came tapping at the door ? ‘‘Good evening miss,’’ I blushing said, For in my heart I knew— And, knowing, hung my pretty head- hat Nellie came to woo. She clasped my big red hand, and fell Adown upon her knees. And cried : ** You know I love you well, So be my husband, please ?” And then she swore she'd ever be A tender wife snd true— Ah, what delight it was to me That Nellie came to woo! She'd lace my shoes and darn my hose, And mend my shirts, she said, And grease my comely Roman nose Each night on going to bed ; She’d build the fires and fetch the coal, And split the kindling, too— Love's perjuries o’erwhelmed her soul When Nellie came to woo. And as I, blushing, gave no check, To her advances rash, She twined her arms about my neck And toyed with my moustache ; And then she pleaded for a kiss, While [—what could I do Bat coyly yield me to that bliss When Nellie came to woo ! I am engaged, and proudly wear A gorgeous diamond ring, And I shall wed my lover fair Some time in gentle spring, I faced my deom witbout a sigh— And so, forsooth, would you, If you but loved as fond as I, And Nellie came to woo. -- Euge ne Fic ld, A A Picturesque Canvass. HOW THE CAMPAIGN IN WOODSTOCK WAS CON- DUCTED BY THE LADIES, The most picturesque canvass for par liamentary election that has been made in England for a long time was in progress at Woodstock over the question whether Lord Randolph Churchiil should be re- elected or should give way to Mr. Corrie Grant, the young lawyer whom the Liberals gent down from London to oppose him. It was a ladies’ battle on both sides, The campaign was begun by Lady Randolph Churchill last Saturday evening by driving a tandem team through the main streets of the picturesque old town, with the skill and grace to be expected of the daughter of the founder of Jerome Park. The Liberals quickly resolved to meet their fair adversary on her own grounds, and secured the ser- vices of Misses King and Adams, two lovely young graduates from Oxford. The de- lightful canvassing of the girl graduates soon captured the populace, and the Tories began to give way. Lady Randolph Churchill lost none of her courage and energy, but saw that something must be done to offaet the influence of the pretty girls from Oxford, and she summoned rein- forcements. lieutenants, Lady Evelyn and Lady Edith Curren, young daughters of Lord Howe, snd sent them forth to dazzle the electors. The latter got more and sweeter blandish- ments than they ever dreamed of before, and were in a dilemma asto which of their suitors to favor. The result was Lord tandolph Churchill was elected by one hundred and twenty of a majority. i tin, _ Fearful Rate of Mortality. The vital statistics of London show a fearful rate of mortality among insured infants, The books of the insurance com- panies show that the death rate among _in- fants who are, insured is much greater than the general death rate for the same ages as published in the government reports. The latter includes both the insured and the uninsured infants. If the two classes could be separated in the official reports so that they could be compared, it is believed it would be shown that the mortality among the insured is 50 per cent. greater than that among the uninsured. These facts strengthen the suspicion into conviction that many infants are deliber- ately murdered for the sake of the insur- anca on their lives. Medical and legal newspapers are imploring parliament to devise some remedy for the growing and horrible evil. inate, 9 aa Special Notices. “TRAW BERRIES AND CREAM, fresh and gond, at Macdouald’s Confectionery, Queen Street. jy 4—2i, Goop Butter makers say no Dairy should be without a thermometer. IT’S Vegetable Sicilian HAIR RENEWER was the first preparation perfectly adapted to eure diseases of the scalp, gnd the first suc- cessful restorer of faded or gray hair to its natural color, growth, and youthful beauty. It has had ma@ny imitators, but none have so fully met all the requirements needful for the proper treatment of the hair and scalp. Hacv’s Hark KENEWER has steadily grown in favor, and spread its fame and usefulness to every quarter of the globe. Its aral, leled success can be attributed to * one cause: the entire fulfilment of its promises. The proprietors have often been surprised at the receipt of orders from remote coun- tries, where they had never made an effort for {ts introduction. The use for a short time of HALL’s Harr RENEWER wonderfully improves the per- sonal appearance. It cleanses the scalp from all impurities, cures all humors, fever, and dryness, and thus prevents baldness. It stimulates the weakened glands, and enables them to push forward a new and vigorous growth. The effects ofthis article are not trangient, like those of alcoholio prepara- tions, but remain a long time, which makes its use a matier of economy.
