It is a beautiful Sunda morn- ing in Edinburgh. The ollowing verse from a Hymn. sung in Grey- friars Church, Candlemaker Row, I thought to be very much in order. For the beauty of the earth, For the beauty of the skies. For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies. Christ our God. to Thee we raise This our sacrifice of praise. As it was the VE-Day service, we were especially interested to learn that the minister himself had just returned from three years bhind barbed wire in a Nazi prison ten years ago today. "And what were you doing and thinking?" He asked the congregation. I myself was on my way home. having left 76 Squadron that morning. All of our crew had been designated for the Far East with a Group known as Tiger Force. We were glad to be on our way back to Canada of course. but a little bitter at missing the Victory celebrations of the Squadron. There had been .3 mar- vellous celebration the night be- fore, a typical R. A. F. send off. When the party was at its height and the room suitably crowded with celebrating air crew, some of the junior officers introduced a fire hose through an open window, which was none too steadily played over the oc- cupants of the room. To those viewing the scene from outside, the results were very satisfactory and something for top enjoyment better viewed than endured. By the time the firemen had arrived to claim their property and the service police to quell the party. it was a regular melcc. .- This is all of course a long way from the cIergyman's sermon in which he deplored the indifference and self righteousness of the Nations, in that each thought itself to be pur- suing the correct policy and con- tinues in do so ivllh little thought as to the rights of othe nations "Even in our council Riambers we see much that is wrong and selfish" he said. Of special interest to me is the velvet bags used to take up the collection. The coins sink silently into their folds and very little noise is made by the money as they are passed around. which seems more in keeping with the dignity of the occasion. Some churches sound like the Royal Mint at collection time and I think wider use could be made of this idea. (To Be Continued) P. E. I. . Bristol ..'Rev. Father Ledwell, O. M. 1..
