Some weeks ago a lady tourist from Massachusetts stated to Tm: Guanniarr that for years past she had annually had hay fever and had come to Prince Edward Island this year when she felt the attack coming on. The result had been a prompt recovery. Yesterday a gentleman from Pennsylvania made a similar remark. Hia wife had been a severe sufferer from hay fever for many years, and they had tried trips abroad to various countries from year to year with the result of only obtain- ing partial relief. Last year for the first time they came to Prince Edward Island. The result was an almost entire exemp- tion from the troublesome complaint. “So we have some back this year, and may stay till October, and we feelllke comin- as long as we live," he said. Hay fever has been almost unknown here. It is believed to be caused by the pollen of certain plants, among which the rag weed and golden rod have been suspected. It is a troublesome disorder which attacks the mucous membranes of the nose and eyes, sometimes produ- cing bronchitis and asthma, and always aggravating any existing troubles of the respiratory organs. It may even be pos- sible that hay fever may yet become pre~ valent here as it is in New England and the Middle States. For the present the fact cannotbe made known too widely that the Island has been hitherto practi- cally free from this malady; that persons usually afhicted when residing elsewhere had themselves exempt when spending the summer here, and some who have felt the attack coming on have been en- tirely relieved by a few weeks soiourn on the Island. o m-_¢l._. Mr. Cooper, editor of the Canadian L tetown. Mr. Cooper readflrms all the reading public here. The following quoted statements made in Mr. Cooper's article' referred to appear to be false and untrue: “The Charlottetown newspaper offices, for example are easily the worst in Cana- I da. There is nothing in the Ontario town to equal them for lack of appearance, un- handiness and dinginess.” “Charlottetown P.E.I. is known through- dingiest and mast unprogressive city of the east. The Provincial buildings are a disgraceto an enlightened community while the whole place seems to have- giv- _ en itself up in disgust.” 1 -?~<>_-.___- ision, No. 4, will meet this Monday Division.
