Henceforth his | progress was steadily upward. J and honors came to him quickly. He passed from major to major-general in seven years—eventful years filled with stirring episodes for his name wasknown now as that of an officer worth utilizing wherever hard work was to be done. So he went on Wolsely’s staff to the Soudan, and a little later was given a brigade command in the last Burmese war, with results that more than justi- fied the high opinion now formed of his military capacity. It was in this com- mand, which was rewarded by both promotion and knighthood, that he ) won still more ; the appreciative esteem |of the then Viceroy, Lord Dufferin, who was heard to express his belief that White was the ablest military officer he had ever met. When ina few years more the appointment of commander-in-chief of the Indian army fell vacant, Lord Dufferin’s sup- port, it is said, availed much to secure the coveted distinction for Sir Geore White. The selection caused some heart-burning, for it meant, the super— seding of several offiers believed by many to be quite as fit for the post. But White got it, and did well with it. He was greatly aided by his intimate acquaintance with Indian military ad- ministration ; he showed much sound sense, and was always personally pop— enemy, ve y\ / woe rece Defective eyes stunt the mind Can you expect fair progress in school or success in business if so handicapped? We would be only too glad at the present mo- ment to strike a bargain with the rest ld that every frontier should remain as now. “Of what other em- pire can that be said? Yet we, who are not trying to gain but to mantain em- pire, we who, in the best and highest sense, are the most conservative force in the world, are the object of the con- cealed dislike of governments who, I think, are less single-minded than our- selves.” Lord Rosebery, in an impas— sioned peroration, calling upon the na- tion to mantain a united front, after speaking of Great Britain as “this lone- ly island in the northern seas viewed with such jealousy, ‘such hostility, such jarred ambition by the great em- pires of the world, who count their armies with embattled millions,” con-— cluded amid stormy applause with Shakespeare’s words : “Naught will make us rue If England to herself remain but true.” iS of the wor TEAK AND.... PUNY CHILDRENS Become Strong and Healthy by using Dr. A. W. Chase’s Nerve Food. Children are frequently left weak and sickly as an after result of measles, scarlet fever, etc., s\and in this state are easy prey to nervous disorders, rickets, spina] disease, or consump- tion, diseases which do not affect robust, bealthy children. The blood is weak and watery and the nerves improperly nourished. Feed the biood and merves with Dr. A. W. Chase's Nerve Food, and the pale, pinched faces will soon become rosy and plump, and tiredness and weakness will give way to strength and animation. Mr. E. W. Day, 62 Close Avenue, Toronto, writes: ‘‘My eldest daughter, aged eight, be- came very much run down. Her fretful, ner- vous, sleepless condition greatly alarmed her parents. She was taken from school, and in spite of the best nursing, the thin, weakened, loodJess face grew painfully worse. Fortun- ately we used Dr. Chase’s Nerve Food. An improvement became apparent in a few days, it continued, and in a few weeks she returned to school built up anew, and greatly to our joy fully restored to health.” Dr. A. W.
