Some weeks ago a Mr. Leary, of Worcester, Massachusetts, wrote to the Skibbereen Guardians asking them to select him a wife from the paupers, stating that the women in his own ‘leas were too much given to drink. The master of the workhouse replied, recom- mending a woman named Margaret Sullivan, and thought to hear no more of it. To his surprise, however, he has just received from Leary a passage ticket and a request that the woman whom he accepted shall be sent out at once. On arrival at New York she is to take ship for New London, and travel by train from thence to the city of Worcester. Any one will then direct her to his house, it being very near the station. a eaainleiees For several weeks past there has been quite a rivalry between two employes of the Steam Navigatioa Company as to which was the better oarsman. After a good deal of preliminary talk it was decided that the two should settle the matter by arace. The race came off last evening. The course was the Company's wharf to the ee buoy off Murphy's Point, and return. hortly after seven o clock the contestants—whom we shall call Peter and Charles for short-—appeared on the scene, and the word ‘‘go” was given.
