THE OLD NEST ,There's little wholly without use, so wasteiulness has no excuse. : ' -Old Mother Nature I Bobby Coon was hurrying. Yes Isir. Bobby was hurrying. He didn't like it. He didn't want to hurry. For one thing. he was too fat. For in long time he had had good eat- ling and little exercise. Those are ithe perfect recipes for getting fat. 1Now Bobby was hurrying because he had to. - He was deep in the Green Forest. He was beycnd the land owned by .Farmer Brown. That "was one ireason why he was hurrying. IFarmer Brown allows no hunting :on his land and Bobby Ccon was being hunted. Far behind him a !Dog was barking. He had found 'Bobhy's scent where Bobby had .been wandering about. The Dog's. jwonderiul nose was able to find it and follow wherever Bobby had wandered. The nearer he got to Bobby, the stronger the scent be- came, and the easier to follow. That is why Bobby was hurrying. It was early evening. Mistress Moon -was riding high in the sky. It was a lovely evening. That is. it had . been until now. It wasn't that Bob- by Coon: was afraid of that Dog. Anytime he could climb a tree and get away from the Dog. True, he had only the sketchiest of spade stoppers. but no other action at this point was logical, with the exception of a penalty double. North rejected the idea oi doubling because of the comparative vulnerability, South thought for a long time about leaving his partner at three notrump, but finally concluded that his own distribution weighed heavi- ly against this decision. so he trierl fcr the major-suit game. This was ll. very dubious commitment. but the result certainly gave south a strong argument! West opened his fourth-highest spade. Declarer ruffed, and then roceeded to get in every one of his ow trumps on successive spade ruffsi I-le crossed to the club queen and trumped another spade, re- turned to the club king and rutfed a third spade. He then went to the diamond ace and ruffed the last spade. cashed the club ac! and the diamond king. and finally put down his ace of trumps for the ful- filling trickl It would appear that an opening trump lead by West would have brought a different conclusion. but this is not necessarily true. It South held up his tmmp ace for one round and took the second, then guessed the diamond finesse. he would still be safe. cameo Holy ileiissnsr ilsll Prince Npva ... 8 am. . 1 pm. making. Bobby was afraid of was that a two-iegged hunter with a dreadful gun might be following that Dog. It was so long since Bobby had been hunted that he had quite forgotten that there was such ll danger. You see, there is no hunt- ing of Coons in summer., "1 wish I knew." muttererd Bob- by as he ran. "If that Dog is alone. there is nothing to -worry about-. But if one of those two-legged hunt- ers is out with him. it is just too bad." Bobby had run only a little way along the Lone Little Path before he began to puff. The further he ran the more he puffed. This was because all summer long he had been lazy. He had done .very little running. It wouldn't have been so bad now had he been thin, but he wgn't. He had been stuffing himself with sweet corn. grapes, berries heavy. As he run he huifed and go puffed and he pulled and he ufied. And how he wished that something would happen to make that Dog lose his traiil Bobby -was headed for a certain ledge deep in the Green Ilbrest. There were many safe hiding places in the rocky ledge where a Dog couldn't follow him and a hunter couldn't get at him. But that ledge was far away and that Dog was getting nearer and nearer. You see, the Dog wasn't fat. and he had done a lot of running about. He wasnlt hurting and puffing. and he was catching up with Bobby Coon. Bcbhy became really anxious. He began to think about climbing a tree. Perhaps he could find a tree with branches so thick that he could hide among them. So he kept his eyes open for such a tree. But he didn't find one. But at long last he came to a tree in which Redtail the Haiivk had had a nest for two or three years. Bobby wasted no time. He climbed that tree almost as fast. as he had been running on the ground. or course at this time of year Red- tail wasn't using that heat. it was way up in the top of the tall tree and it was a big nest because each year Redtail and Mrs. Redtall had added a. little to it. Bobby climbed over the edge of it and curled up in that nest. He was sure that. no one on the ground ccuid see him He was right. He was still breath- ing hard when the Dog reached the foot of the tree. , He knew right away that Bobby was up in.that tree. He began to bark in a different way. He was telling his master that that Coon was up in a tree and that he would keep him there until his master came. 89 some wafcmis I repavked r5y:7 liiiii iliili ' WATCHMAKER ocroaan 3. 1950 . ii. iaiiinonls rs we come 1'0 mowms voila sill?
