E. Island. a | Single Copies Two Oents MONDAY, THB DAILY EXAMINER. — Montreal Gazette: The Globe has an article on the trouble at Ottawa. The trouble at Ottawa among the Conservatives is nothing compared with the trouble in getting to Ottawa among the Libera’:. It is the latter that really worries the ‘ilobe. —lLatdy Aberdeen is one of the contrilu- tors to the women’s number of the Evening Journal, of Ottawa. Mra. Annie Howells Frechette, a sister of W. D. Howells, the American novellist, will be editress-in- chief of the paper, and Miss Mary Scott the business manager. —The Montreal Gazette’s Newfoundland veorrespondent reports that there is a grow- ing feeling in the island in favor of con- federation. Meanwhile the negotiations at Oltawa seem to be proceeding favorably. It is quite likely that in a month or twe the last stone will have been added to the the building of the Dominion. —Montreal Gazette: Mr. Geoffrion told the electors of Vercheres on Sunday that he approved of the Manitoba schools order- in-council and would give his support to uy party or Government which would render justice to the Catholics. It would be interesting to hear from Mr. Laurier if he approves of the ettitude of his sup- perter and lieutenant in this matter. It would, also, in all probability, be well for Mr. Laurier himself if he would speak. The Conservative Government stands to lose a good many votes because of the ground it has taken, but where it suffers most it must gain in- respect compared with an opposition whose leader dare not define his attitude on a burning question he helped to set on fire. —France has about 3,000,000 horses and Germany has about 3,500,000. France has 8 horses to 100 inhabitants; Germany hus Only’ 74 horses to 100 inhabitants. French cities and towns use 850,000 horses, the cavalry 150,000, and farmers’ breeding and work horses the other 2,000,- 000. Recent statistics show that the num- ber of horses used in cities and towne in- crease every year in a more rapid propor- tian than the population of the same, owing, no doubt, to the greater number of public conveyances offered to the public. N@ small town in France to-day but what has ite line of street cars’ As for the city of Paris alone, the number of horses it contains has increased from 70,000 head in 1870 to 120,000 to-day, and the work ac¢omplished by them daily on the pave- ment of the capital, estimated in miles, represenis two and a half times the dis- tance around the world. —A London correspondent says that Parliament has rarely had before it so technical and so complex a measure as the Trish land bil]. The kernel of this proposal liesin «what is called the improvement clauses. These commend themselves so Ulster tenant¥y that after 7 . atives of that body, Mr T W Russell declared he should cor- dially, heartily and strennously support Mr Morley’s bill. This ection no doubt helped to force the hand of the landlords, and to it is largely attributable the circum- stance that the bill was unopposed on the second reading. Mr Balfour admitted that the act of 1881 should be amended in some form, but this measure re-opens too widely the whole land question, and would encourage further demands on the part of tenants for the perpetuation of a state of things intolerable. Some confir- mation of this is found in Mr. Sexton’s declaration that the bill embedies the principles of the Land League, and would result in the further manipulation of rents with a view to some future superstructure of purchases. It was certainly a sensible suggestion that the bill should be referred to acommittee ef both Houses, because the landlords sit in the one and the tenants in the other. The real struggle over the measure will come in committee. The Radicals are preparing for the conflict by pressing the Government to threaten clo- sure of amendments on the principle of last year’s gagging. Any such step would dry up whatever sympathy the Lords may have for the measure, and several of them are not unfavorable to many of the clauses. Glad Tidings of-Great Joy There could be no gladder tidings than news of acure for consumption. The rea! estate market, says Simpson’s Real Estate Record of Montreal for Apri!, has apparently taken a turn for the better, and it has fulfilled last month all reason- able expectations regarding it. Although business is still quiet, the indications of improvement are _ beretofore, and this is perceptible in the number, character and volume of the transactions recorded during the month of May.
