He pointed out that the fire alarm had been reprired in 1897 at a cost | cf about $590 Chief Engineer Large, in reply to qveslions, expressed the opinion that it woud be a waste Of mony to attemptio do anything with the present fire alarm system. Whil+ the epecial system con- neciing the houses ot firemen was working i well, the boxes had pever given satisfaction. False alarms hal been frequently sent in, and the firemeo had maby an unnecessary run in all hinds of weather. The eoatrast was very striking, the wire atthe peesent time being iu a bad way | from rust and decay. Mr. Stewart show. was a fair sample of the alarm wire throughout the city. This wire was nota reliatle con- ductor of electrici y m ite present state. It would in copper wire. have to be pu’ in B-sxi-s there svoui! bea man to look afiertne system. He ibonght the present wires should be taken down before they fatl sud perhaps cause less of life. Counciilor Niecbolson said the system had been neglecied. For eight months after it had been repaired only one false alarm camein. He had been told by two electricians that the present system could be repaired. He had information that it would cos: from $10,000 or $129800 to put in anew system, Captaics Ranaghan and Pickard, and Mr. Charles Hermans agreed with what had been said by Chief Large regarding the alarm. Captain Ranaghan said 1 had been « nuisance to the firemen.
