It is cessary to say that if the ind is wet, it must be thoroughly d ned or family use we recommend plant- g in beds four feet wide, with an ley two teet wide between. These will accommodate three rows of plants, which may stand fiftzen inches y, and the outside row nches from the alley. The beds Kept clean, and the fruit can be gathered from them without setting the feet upon them. Culture in hills is the that can be adopted for the garden. To obtain fine, large, high-flavored fruit, pinch off the runners as fast as ar. repeating che operation elames' ao : iney appea a i i best mode often as may be necessary during e jmer and early autumn. Every runner thus removed produces a new crown, and in the fall the plants will have formed large bushes or stools, cn which the finest strawberries may be expecied the following season. In the meantime, the ground among the plants should be kept clear of weeds, and frequently stirred with a hoe or fork. Where the winters are severe, with little snow for protection, a slight cover- ing of leaves or litter, or the branches of evergreens wilt be of great service. This covering should not be placed over the plants until after the ground ig frozen, usually from the middle of November till the first of December in this locality. Fatal errors are often nade by putting on too much and too early. Care mustalso be taken to remove the covering in the spring, just as soon as the plants begin to grow. Before the fruit begins to ripen, julch the ground around the plants with short hay or grass mowings from the lawn, or anything of the sort. This rill not only keep the fruit clean, but will prevent the ground from drying $ $ City of Ghent PICKFORD & BLACK S. A bed managed in this way will give two full crops, and should then be spaded or plowed down, a new one in the meantime having been prepared to take its place. The number of plants required for an acre, at any given distance apart, may be ascertained by dividing the mber of square feet in an acre (43,- 560) by the number of square feet giv- én to each plant, which is obtained by multiplying the distance between the ants. Thus, strawberries planted three feet by one foot, give each plant three square feet, or 14,520 plants to the acre. Plants set out in July or August will yield a moderate crop the next year. _—— As scon as it is learned in this coun- try that fewer acres better cultivated are better than many acres carelessly cultivated, the greater will be the pro— fits of farming. The great extent and Original cheapness of farming lands have been a detriment to us agricul- turally. The time wil! come when herds will rove over great fields, but will be soiled ; when the wheat and corn crops will be made to more than double the present average yield, and when farming will be less irksome because its operation will be more con tracted in every respect.
