ALL AROUND THE HOUSE. Hints About Dressing Over Old Fura ture, success, I took three broom handles, cut then the length desired forlegs, and gave then two coats of white paint. Then I had a carpenter make me : square board for the tov, This 1 alsc painted white, fastened the legs to | with ecrews, the head of which w painted white, Where the legs are crossed I fastene.. it securely with wire and puta bow oi r.bbon there, If one wished to have this table in a piak, blue or greeu room the painting could be done in tiie desired color. I find that much can be done in the way of making things out of nothing, as on¢ girl bachelor r know says when slic builds a gown out of scraps, but you musi have ingenuity and patience. The packing box offers no end of possi inlities, and they car be made to be orna- mental as well as useful. Up in my red room I desired to have a unique dressing case built around one of the windows,so I procured three packing boxes and placed them around the win dow to give the desired appearance, tie center and lower part to be used as 3 window seat, I took two boxes -\e same size. hig) enough to reach above the window sill, and about 18 inches in width, and ai other long, narrow one to place betweer them. The two outer boxes I furnished with two shelves, each to_be used for holding hats and bonnets. The center box was divided into a compartment for holding boots, shoes and rubbers, The boxes should be planed until they are very smooth, the cracks filled with putty, and then painted outside and ix with enamel paint. I bought turkey red, and put up cur- tains on small brass rods, and made ¢ cushion with backs and sides to fit the window, and now I revel in a most con- venient Iow seat, where one can sit com- fortably for the putting on and taking off of boots and slippers. This may sound a bit improbable, bui just try, and you will see how well it will work, Only be careful about get: ting your boxea of equal heights and sizes. —New York Recorder. THE LINEN OLOSET. What it Should Be and Some of the Things it Should Contain. The woman who would relentlessly sacrifice a ‘‘cozy corner” or a “dressing room” in order that she might have au ample linen closet is the housewife upon whom one may depend. The linen closet is too frequently half of the side. board drawers, plus a bottom bureau drawe: or two. And the owner of such a linen closet is the one whose table- cloths are always mysteriously disap- pearing, whose napkin sets are frequent. ly broken, and who cannot tell ‘‘where the toweis go.” All the huusehold linen should be kept in one place—a dry, light closet, if ible, or a chest of drawers. A list of the belongings of the closet should be tacked up in a_ prominent po sition, and when any article is dis- carded, it should be struck out from the list. The shelves, if a closet is used, should not be higher than may be con- venieutly reached, and they should be covered with stout, white paper. The various sorts of goods should be careful. ly sorted, tablecloths having their place, sheets theirs, and so on. The usual list of the necessary supplies for a well-ordered household mentions as requisite four sheets, a ere slips and two spreads for each ; four bath towels and seven huckaback or damask ones a week for each member of the family ; seven crash hand towels for the kitchen, twelve soft crash towels for dishes, and five glass towels ; two dozen napkins each for dinner, breakfast, lun- cheon and tea, and half a dozen doilies to match each set; two luncheon clothe, one tea cloth, two breakfast cloths, four dinner cloths and four tray clothe; with as many b ponte: bureau, sideboard, shelf aug stand covers and centerpieces as one can afford.-New York Worid. Le referred to the ser- vant giri,” JUST SIMPLY STOP BREATHING. That is Said to be a Sure Way to Avoid Colds, It is a tact not geuerally known tht if a person holds his breath wasps and bees may be handied wit impunity. The skin practically becomes a coat of mail against which the insects vainly drive their stings. The moment a particle of air escapes from the langs the stings will penetrate. In explanation of this curious fact a well-known physician ad- vances the theory that holding the breath partially closes the pores of the skin, and thus leaves no opening for at- tack, This interesting statement ¢x- plains and enhances the value of a prac- tice I have followed for the prevention of colds. For many years my occupa- ticn took me to crowded political and labor meetings, generally held in rooms destitute of any means of ventilation, Tie heat was intense, the air fetid and isonous. I have left such meetings bathed in perspiration and plunged into the chill ain of a. winter's night, thereby running the risk of catching the severest cold. Yet, strange to say,I enjoyed a singular immunity from such aggravat- ing ailments. At the first touch of cold air | tok a deep inspiration, and then held my breath for half a minute, in the meantime walking as fast as I could. During that balf minute the pores of the skin were closed against the chilling at- mosphere, and by the time the Junge called for reinvigoration the body had considerably cooled and the risk of a chill was over. I recommend this prac- tice to public speakers, vocalists, enter- tainers, and those who are obliged to frequent unduly lieated reoms. In my own case the practice never failed, and although I fully believe in its value I never understood the reason of it until a learned scientist came forward with the remarkable theory that while holding the breath the skin could be maintained impenetrable to the sting of a bee.— | Jeaness Miller Monthly.
