April 21 - (GP) - Canada now has a four-child average family and her long-term rate of natural increase in popula- tion will probably be greater than that of Ceylon, Malaya or some Latin American countries, says an economic survey published in Lon- don. The reference to Canada. occurs in "Halfway to 1960." an article by Auairnlian economist. Colin Clark, published in Lloyd's Bank Review, and is cited to support the author's prediction that from now until 1970 the world's population will increase at the rate of approxim- ately 1 1-4 per cent I year. Using what he admits to be highly simplified and approximate terms. based on new French lllC".h0(lI of determining popula- tion trends. Clark says that only England, Sweden and Denmark now adhere to the two-child aver- age family of the 1030s. In Scot.- land and Australia the figure is 21-2 and there is a three-child average in the United states. France. Switzerland, Norway, Fin- land, Netherlands, Italy. New Zealand and among the whites of South Africa. "Canada, with Spain and Por- tugal, now shows I. four-child average family," writes Clark. "it appears that these latter figures. ascending, now have pau- ed the giadually-descending fig- ures of many Oriental countries. such asJapan, India. Russia, in which the average size of family now appears to be at below four- iiiid, of course. the Oriental mor- tiility is far higher." Long-term Increase. in another passage, Clark says that in couiitries such as Canada and Spain, the long-term rate of increase now probably exceeds that of the most rapldly-increas- ing oriental countries. such as Ceylon. Malaya. or Liiiin Amer-icii. tLatest figures show the cam- dtaii birth-rate has increased from 22 per 1,000 of population in 1940 to 25.8 in 1960. A rate of 35 per 1,000 would be regarded as ex- tremely high for a western civil- ization.) The trend towards increased world population contrasts with a contraction of world food supplies.
