' Beginning this afternoon and con- tinuing until sunset tomorrow, cath- olics throughout the world will take part in the devotion of Portiuncula. The indulgence of Portluncula may be gained at any of the churches of the three great orders instituted by St. Francis. In every Franciscan church there will be a constant procession of worslilpers bent on securing the prof- fered grace. The indulgence is not confined to members of a Franciscan parish, but every Catholic who car- ries out the necessary requirements may gain it. Portiuncula affords one of the very rare occasions when more than one plenary indulgence may be gained in a day, as this indulgence is merited for each visit during which the proper Prayer is offered. The de- votee must leave the church, howev- er, after each indulgence, and, on re- turning, recite n short prayer. Only the first indulgence is applicable to the visitor, and the remainder must be applied to the souls in purgatory. The conditions for gaining the in- dulgence are confession and commun- ion. Ifn addition, the heads ol the church recommend public pr-nys;-5_ such as the recitation of the rosary for the sovereign pontiii, the bishops, clergy and the church, with an invo- cation to St. Francis of Assisi. Pro- tiuncula is the na-me of B small church near Assisi, Itnly, which became fa- mous throughout the Catholic world* because of the remarkable indulgence St. Francis gained for the chapel. The indulgence was granted in 1223, and ever since the small church has been visited each first of August by thousands of pilgrims. As the chapel holds only a few people, the devotees walk through in endless procession, praying and singing, while a small army of priests administer the sacra- ment of penance. In 1622 the indulg- ence was extended to all Franciscan churches and it is now generally oh- served throughout the Catholic world.
