DOUGLAS MACLIAN SUPERVISOR MONCTON- The appointment of Captain Douglas MacLean as sup- ervisor of the Canadian National Railways marine services in the Maritime provinces was announc- ed here today by R.G. Hayes. vice- president and general manage of the CNR's Atlantic Region. Born at Crieff, Scotland. Cap- tain MacLean started his sea-going career in 1935 as a cadet in the British Merchant Marine. During World War Two he served as third and second officer in ships of the Blair Line. sailing to ports around the globe. During this period he survived three torpedo sinkings in the North Atlantic. and he was a passenger in the CNS "Lady Nel- son" when the famous ship was torpedoed of! St. Lucia. At that time he was enroute to Trinidad to join a new ship. In 1944 he joined the F ”' National Steamships West Indies service, and has sailed as r' and first officer in all the ships of the fleet. He transferred to the CNR marine division in 1944 as second officer on tile Northumber- land Strait ferry service. and in 1949 was appointed first officer. The following year he was promot- ed to captain. serving on both the "Prince Edward Island" and the "Abegweil." since that time.
