Dier, Manager Charlottetown Branch SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1920 ‘t istitiioitltrtvrs DESIRABLE Every province in Canada is making a bid for the immigrantswho are now crossing the Atlantic from Europe-every province except Prince Ed- ward Island- In a recent issue of the Guardian we‘ gave a summary of the number of farms and‘ the acerage at present unoccupied an~d_~available for purchase and settlement in the province. _There are many such farms, some of them conveniently sit- uated with respect to markets, schools, churches and other requirements of civilization and indeed all of them nearer to centres of civilization than any to be found in the unoccupied spaces in West- ern Canada. All of these farms could. be occupied, cultivated and added to the fertile and prosperous farms which constitute by far the greater part of the province, but we are doing nothing to induce settlers to come and take them up. . 'We are not looking for, nor do we want, set- tlers from the partially submerged countries of Central Europe. Nor are we looking for pioneers to go into tthe forest, as ourforefathers ‘did, and spend toilsoine years in carving out farms for future gen- erations. The class we wish to encourage to come here and to whom we can make a definite promise of abundant return forlabor and" investment, are the tenant farmers of the‘ United Kingdom who wish to own farms of their own, -in the midst of suitable surroundings, churches, schools, markets and such social conditions as are to be found in- the older and settled countries. We have in the past few years received a few such immigrants and they are--wthout exception, so far as we can learn-- among our most prosperous farmers. There is room for more, room for an additional 100,000 to our pop- ulation andout of the stream now flowing Canada- ward from the old country we could get them if we made the proper effort to. let them know what we have to offer them. This matter has been discussed for many years, the desirability of having such immigrants settle among us,‘ the advantage to the province of such settlement, the probability that such immi- grants would become prosperous, happy and con- ' tented settlers haveall been-acquiesced in, but nofli ting definite has been accomplished and the few who come among us come through the influence of friends or by way of experiment. It is gratifying to know that, so far as material l prospects areconcerned, these can give a favourable l report from their own experiences. Whatever draw- back we may be handicapped by can be remedied t and all the more readily through the infusion of , good clean fresh blood into our industrial and civil tVélllS- ~ l ' ilsily Selections - Cuiitlim linden Furnished by W. \_ Loosen. 000004 CHRISTMAS IS _ COMING Happiest words of the whole year-Au the littlest child that can and", stand them-to the dearest old grandmother who can hear them, and to every ‘other wholehearted human being between.
