About Cancer.

la the Pall Mali Gazette H. Duan, F. R.C.S., discusses the ques tion of the increase of cancer. The re velations of statistics on this subject, be says, are sufficiently discomposing. The forty-third annual report of the Registrar-General of Great britain shows that during the ten years 1860-09 in clusive, there were 80,049 deaths from this disease in the British Islander. The annual average iacrease was 249. From 1870 to ‘79 the total number of deaths from the same cause was 111,301, and the annual average increase 320. disease is mere prevalent among the rich than among the poer, according to a French observer, the ratio being 7 to 10 percent. Itis almost conclusive, the writer says, that the habits of life are concerned, if notin the actual pro duction, at least in the predisposition to eancer. As far as known at present it has not a gymotic origin, that is, is not one of the ordinary “filth” er intectious diseases. There is no such thing as a transmission of anything cancerous from arent to child. There may hewever, a the inheritence of a predisposition. The gleam of light which has shed some radiancy over the gloominess of cancer comes from surgery. Better re- sults are now obtained in surgery than ever before. Andit ought to be re. membered that the successful treatment ef this disease depends as much upon its early recoguition as upon means ad-

We dare say the time will come when it will not be possible for any body and everybody to get married, simply because they desire to do so. The world is witnessing great changes,and restric- tions upon matrimonial ventures may yet bein store for certain kinds of people. The marriage of the ‘midgets, so called,which is said to have occurred in London, Eng., on Wendesday,would seem to show the necessity ef some re- straints. The cable tells us that ‘the midgeis, General Mite and Millie Edward, were marriec this morning ip the Registrar's office in Manchester. Both were carried up stairs enveloped in shawls and placed on a low office table. They were perfectly self-possess- ed and answered the usual/questions and repeated the declarations distinctly bustin their piping voice. After the marriage they breakfasted at the Grand Hetel. The religious ceremony was performed in the afternoon, according to the Prespyterian rite.’

The last promotion in the English Guards under the old system was made a few weeks ago. Hitherto a Licuten- ant in the Guards ranked as Captain in the army, and a Captain as Lieutenant- Colonel in the army. but that is now abolished.

Railway matters are bumming in Northumberland County, N. B. The location of the government branch from Derby Siding, near Neweastle, to Indiantown, 134 miles, has been com- pleted, and it is thought work will be commenced immediately. A contract has been entered into for building an opposition line-~as part of the Mirami- cbi Valley railway—from Chatham to Withio three miles of Indiantown. A cargo of steel rails for this road has been landed at Chatham.
