Sin,—Itis gratifying to learn that the Coarlotietown Board of Trade haa a length determined (0 make an effort to heve The Minto come te Char- lovtetown early in March. The Minister of Marine and Fisheries, Capt Finlayson, Or whoever i# responsible for the service this wivter, has evidently turned a deaf tar tothe interests of the peopl: of this Provinee. It Tue Minto is a iything like being up to the standard of : ficiency guar- anteed by Mersre, Farguharaon, McKinnon & Co., wit's the ice pot sufficiently strong in Pownal Bay fer mud digging, with the Straite comparatively cl-ar, with the horses dropping througn the ice in Char lottetown _ Harbor, and men actually stumping in the middle of February, not one day should have passed without The Minto clearing sfrom and entering the port of Charlotieiows.

It i# an undeniable fact that b tween 8 and 90 per cent of the Miuto’s freight i traosperted from Charlo.teia wo, as shown by the long train of cara that daily pull! out of the etation for Georgetown; and what is true of our wivter exports is «lso true in regard toour imports This trane- portation adds greatly to the earnings of the P_ EK. I. Railway, and thus Superin - tendent Sharp will be enabled to show a decrease in the deficit, as owing to the South African war and the boom ia Syd- ney our winter exports have been greater than heretofore. But while the P. EI. Railway may thus sbov greater earnings, it will be at the cost of the farmers and producers in thie province. Place the Minto on the Charlottetown-Pictou route and the farmers who teday are paying the freigut to Georgetown would have this mony in their pockets. But this will not suit the Government. The Minto is kep: on the Georgetown route,and thus are the farmer fleeced.

The Patriot informe tke public that The Minto is one of the finest steamships 1» America. If so, why nots come to Charlottetown and thus save to the farmers the cost of transportation to Georgetown ? Can it be possible even, after all the certificates published in the Patriot as to her capabil:ties, that Captair Finlayson is actually afraid to put her inte ice ?

Notwithstanding al] that has been written in The Patriot, it is an undeniable fact that The Minto’s machinery has not been working smoothly, and that on San- days she hus been turned into a veritable workshop, repairing the engines. Itisa notorious fact that io making the tripac- crese the Atlantic o sliding valve was so much worn that a new one hai since to be put in; and s9 rapidly did it wear, that inspector Stevens wae telegraphed fcr and arrived in Georgetownon Jap. 15th in order to see if she was safe to run; and as a resulta tbird valve bas been ordered. After an expenditure ef between $8000 and $9060 cn herin Charlottetown, even to make her passable, such is the condition of the boat that the Patriot characterizes as as being “one of the best in Americra.”

We have been told that ehe carries one third more freight than the Stanley. If the Editor of The Patriot wished to put himerlf right on this matter, he wovli have examined the gross and net ‘onnage as stamped on the hatch-combings of the respective steamers, and he should know that the carrying capacity is indicated by the net tonnage, and from the fact that the Minto is 1200 tone gross and 370 tons net, whilst the Stanley 1s 1000 tons gros and 394 tons set, it should be apparent io amindof even the mosi limited capacity which s'eameris capable of carrying th mere freigbt.

Mesers. F. S. Jostand W. P. Doull gave ao e»tertainment to the inmates of Falcon- wood asylum. Mr. Jost’s graphophone graad furniehed the music, songs, etc., and Mr. Doull’s steroptican and bio- graph the pictures, all of which were keenly enjoyed by the patiente. A slight accident at the close set fire to Mr. Doall’s biograph films, some of which were consumed. The fire, though re, ret= table was extiogaished without the aid of water and without serious coutequences beyond the loss of films which we under- stand was financially considerable.

Macdonald, avative of Victoria County, C. B., hae knewn Mr. Wilson for six or eight years and hae been hiv boss in the construction of railroads at different places during that time. The letter says thai Mr. Macdonald always found the deceased a sober trurt- worthy man.
