Sultan Disposed to be Reasonable.

CONSTANTINOPLE, July 15.—Im portant Ministerial councils have been held at which the indemnity of six million pounds was agreed upon as the extreme limit of Turkey’s concession. This agreement has been sanctioned by an Imperial Trade. The Sultan after considering tte report answered as follows: “ J} am convinced that the efforts and energy of the Powers are directed solely for the maintenance of peace and the prevention of complications. Itis the plain duty of Turkey, whose sentiments are likewise pecitic, to put an end to the present abnormal Situation . Consequently I command the Ministers to find the necessary means for concluding, if possible, theznegotiations and sign the preliminaries for peace on Thursday next.

Disastrous Gale.

Portianp, Me., July 15.—The upprece- dented gale of Tuesday continued with in- creased fury yesterday. None of the coast- wise steamers have left harbor for two days. Reports of disasters to shipping are coming in.

Bostox, July 15.—The schr. Golden Rule, arrived today from a fiehing ‘trip reports the loss of six ‘ishermen of her crew while attending trawls. One was Nova Scotian.

At Digby, Nova Scotia, on the 10th inet, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs, G. Wightman, after a lingering illness, Char- lotte Gedie Toombs, eldest danghter of William Toombs, Esq., North Rustico, and beloved wife of H. F. Coombs, former- ly of this city, now of St. John, N.B. A dutiful daughter, a faithful wife, a fond mother. The memory of the just is blessed and those that sleep in Jeeus ehall God bring with Him.

Havaya, July 19— Reports from Sandti Spiritus contirm the rumor that Gen. Quivtan Bandera, who commanded the insurgents in the engagement on July 5th, Papve Heights, was killed during the fight. Captain General Weyler, who left Sancti Spiritus in the latter part of last week with the Austurias battalion, sur- prised a camp of the insurzents near Jarico, and a sharp engagement took place, Among the killed was the well-known Dr. Hernandez.

Montreal, July 12.—The cable from the Star’s correspondent says: London, July 12.—The Dominion of Canada will have many important Chinese and Japan- ese vis tora next month. Prince Arisugawa, the Mikado’s specia! envoy to the Queen’s jubilee, with a sue of nine, sailed by the Dominion liner Vancouver on Saturday to embark on the Empress of India from Vancouver. Chang Yien Huan, the Chinese speeial envoy and his suite of sixteen, will also returo via Canada. Baron Rosen, the Russian minister to Japan, and suite sail on the Empress of India on Aug. 2.

But in Opposition to this it isa fact that the Merchants bank people are buying up all the Bank of Nova Scotia stock they can obtain. There is nodoubt at all ‘in the minds of, well-jrfo med banking people here that the Merchants bauk is auxious to accomplish the proposed amalgamation and thus place themselves on an equal footing with the Bank of Montreal with its capital of $18,000,000 and its agencies all over Canada and in the United States cities. The combined capital ofthe thres banks that it is proposed to amalgamate would be $15,5(0,000. What Opporition there will be in the east at least will lixe- iv come from the Bank.of Nova Scotia. Shareholder who are satisfied with mat. ters as they stand and would be averse to allowing the control of the bank of which they are so proud and which pays so well to pass to Montreal. .

Boston, July 13.—The mysterious dis- ease which bas recently afflicted. residents of Somervile, and which bsffled the vbysicians, has been explained. The vic- tims seemed to have been afflicted by ivy pisoning, the hands and arms reddening and swelling, but as a rule they gould prove tbat they had not touched ivy. The en- ployes of the Gypsy Moth Commission say that the whole trouble comes from toucl,— ing the brown-taii moth, the new pest recently discovered in that vicinity. .Tle commission is fighting the moth, and em- ployes are killing them at the ate of 100,000 a day.

O’NeitL, Neb., July 13.—The Rev. Reuben Beackim, pastor of a negro church near this place, is urging that each mem- ber of his congregation put out one eye. Beackim himeelf put his peculiar teachiug into practice some time ago with the result tat inflammation has set in his remaining eye, and he is now threatened with total blindness. Notwithstanding that, seve; ] of his flock followed his example. Beac- kim declares that. the Lord approves ot oc - yed men, and backs up his conteation with the twenty-second verse of the sixth chapter of Matthew, in which occurs the words: “If, therefore, thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” It looks as if many of Beackim’s congregation would, literally, follow him blindy, —

Lonpon, July 13.—Thé Times’ Athens, correspondent savs a fight occurred tt Canida, between British troops and Bashi Bazouks. A number were killed on hoth sides. The Bashi Bazouks have been summeon-d to surrender atms within four days. They have addressed a petition to the Sultan. The admirals of the foreign fleets sent five warships to Candia.

Lonxpon, July 13.—The appeal of the Sultan to the Emperor Francis Joseph, and the unusual fact chat the text of the latter’s reply has been published, taicen together with Emperor William’s advice, indicate that Abdul Hamid is seeking a pretext to enable him to resist successfully the demands of the Turkish war party by representing himself as compelled to com ply with the demands of Europe.

Robert Cook of Boston was in Pittsburg recenty arranging to perform the remark able feat cf walking from Pittsburg to Cincinnati on water, »® distance of 400 miles. Cook is the inventor of a pairof water shoes. He says that with the use of them he can make as good time asa man walking along an asphalt street. While in Chicago a few days ago, this was questioned. Cook offered to wager $1000 that he would walk a distance of 400 miles in 14davs and do it easily. This was quickly taken by Jobn Lopold, and the money is now in the hands of a responsible stakeholder. The start will be made in Sept. Ist. at noon. After completing his arrangements, Cook will go to training on Lake Pontchartrain, La.
