Why does not the Islander call wpon them to resign, if that paper sets any real value on the doctrine which it advocates? And we are happy to say that the reeipts from the Public Works also show gratifying results. Up to the 3lst October, {[849, the Revenue from this department was £64.601; up to the same day of this year it was £76,673—or an increase of £12,072. A very pleasing feature is this increase is that it has not been constant throughout the year, but on comparing the different months o 1850 with the corresponding terms in 1849, the increase is seen to be progress- ive throughout the ten months. In the éarly months the improvement over 1849 was very light, but in August the in- crease rose to £2,715; in Meptember to £3,326; and in October to £3,645. Showing that the route is becoming better known.

The Toronto Examiner says that the Court has sentenced to four months imprisonment in the County jail, the Rev. Mr. Dean, of the Methodist Episcopal church, found guilty, last Assizes, of performing the marriage ceremony for parties, one of whom he knew to have a husband then living.

In Lucx.—We learm not from rumor, but on undoubted authority, that at Sparks’s Bar, en Yuba river, five men have taken out within a few days five hundred and twenty-five pounds of gold.

In their three best days they took out as follows: the first day fifty-three pounds, the second day forty-four pounds, and the third day thirty-five pounds. Six weeks ago the leads might have been pur- chased for $500 apiece. ‘The lucky men left this city with their gold in the Sena- tor last Thursday, intending to take the next steamer for the States.
