Tue ship St. Bernard’s, owned by Mr. W. D. Levitt, of Yarmouth, N. S., was wrecked at Flushing, while on passage from New York to Antwerp. The captain, pilot and five of the crew were drowned. This ship was in- sured in Yarmouth offices for forty thousand dollars. Her loss is a great blow to Yar- mouth shipping and insurance.
Tur N. P.—In a Barbadoes trade circular to hand, we observe the signiticant item ‘‘Sugar sales are made principally for Gana- diag account.” A year ago such a statement could not have appeared ; a cargo of sugar to Canada was indeed arava avis, Sugar sales on Canadian account mean dollars to Cana- dian workmen, and long may trade circulars contain them. — Pictou Standard.
Quick Work-—-The steamer ‘‘ Montague” left Georgetown on Monday last at 10 o'clock, a.m., steamed to Pictou, entered on the Marine Slip, got fully sheathed with copper sheathing; and was back to her position on the Georgetown Ferry at 4 o'clock on Tuesday morning. We congratulate Mr. Fairchild on this expeditious performance, and think he may fairly challenge competitors in this line of business. —Com.
An Ontario elopingcouple have come to grisf. Mrs. MeCalluma married woman, of Brockville, eloped with James McDonald. The party left Brokville, going to Morristown, Syracuse, Rome, Briarhill, and finally to Guelph, While in the latter place: the pris- oner took $100 from her and refused to return it. She then went to Toronto with him and had him arrested. He was taken before a magis- trate on Thursday last, and asking for sum- mary trial, was committed to prison for nine months.
Berore leaving Sable Island, the passengers of the ill-fated steamer City of Virginia passed the following resolution: ‘‘ We desire to ex- press our appreciation of the comforts fur- nisked and the protection ‘afforded us by the Dominion of Canada. We take the greater pleasure in doing this, as but two of our num- ber are subjects of that Government. With- out the provision thus made, the trials of our situation would have been much increased, if, indeed, they could have been borne.” They also passed resolutions of thanks to the cap- tuin and officers, for their fearless conduct during the week and their Kind treatment of them.
