Mercier Men Hold the Grit Fort,

Orrawa, Sept. 7.

_ The chief talk among the members on Saturday was the extra indemnity. Ac- cording to law the members draw seven dollars per day as the session progresses, and at prorogation get the balance, after a discount of eight dollars per day for time lost is deducted, It is said that several members, some on each side of the House, have declared they will not remain after their pay is stopped.

Governor Schultz may be a bad man and a boodler, but his accusers in the Public Accounts Committee on Friday failed miserably in their attempt to make out a charge against him.

The Mercier men maintain the ascen- dency in the opposition party here. They ha ve so effectually suppressed the element which denounced Mr, Pacaud when the discovery of the $109,( 0 steal was first made, that the latter only call their souls their own by sufferance.

The Imperial troopship Tyne arrived on Saturday from England, via Bermuda, and brings ten big guns for the Canada to re- place the armament hitherto carried by that ship, which were of the same class as the guns which recently exploded on the H.M S Cordelia on the Australian sta- aion, when a number of officers and men were killed.

Two monster turrets are being built on the gigantic new forts being erected on York redoubt and MeNab’s Island, and when these are completed Halifax harbor will be impregnable.

Those who know state that Lieut. -Gov- ernor Angers is constantly closeted with the Secretary, and is believed to be pre- paring for the crisis which is certainly near at hand. The further Mercier’s friends go with their defence the deeper they sink into the mire.

Great Crops Out West. Winnipee, Man., Sept. 7.

A letter received here to-day from Ed- monton, dated Sept. 1st, states that at the date named the harvest was more than half over, and that all the remaining wheat and barley, and nearly all the oats were then ripe. There has been no frost, and the grain and vegetable crops were so eminently satisfactory that Agricultural Society was preparing a car- luad to compete for the various prizes at the coming agricultural show at Winnipeg. It is confidently predicted that there will be over 50,000,0C9 bushels of wheat in Mani- toba this year that will not show the slight- est trace of frost, and will be included in three grades, No. land two hard, and No. 1 northerns. This estimate is for Manitoba alone, and half as much more will be gathered in the Territories.

Havivax, Sept. 7.—Quebec—No fishing at any stations excepting Perce, Newport Point, and Paspebicac, where the codfishing was fair.

P. E. L—Mackerel fair on the west shores of Tignish and Alberton. Hake and caplin good; cod wnd mackerel “ir off East Poiut.

Cape Breton—Hake plentiful, haddock fair, and a few cod at Port Hood. Cod fair and a few mackerel at Meat Cove. A few cod and mackerel at Ingonish, about one and a half quintala ot cod per boat at Louisburg. Cod and herring fair and some mackerel at St. Peters.

Nova Scotia—Cod fair at Canso; haddock good and herring fair at Digby, but no cod seiner. “John Kennedy” arrived at Digby to-day, trom St. Mary’s Bay, with 125 bbls. shad and 175 bbls. mackerel, and reports the ‘Emma Small” and others doing well.

New Brunswick —Lhe ood, herring, mack- erel and sardine fisheries, reported good at Campobelio. Bait squid reported pientiful off East Point, P. E. f, and at Campobello. Four Bankers baited within the last two days at Arichat, C. B.

Visit of Prof, Jon Robertson,

The Dairy Industry of P. E. Island.

THE visit of Professor John Robertson, of the Experimental Farm, Ottawa, to this Island during the last month, must be pro- ductive of much good te those interested in the manufacture of butter and cheese. The Professor, on his arrival at Charlottetown, visited the Cornwail cheese factory, made cheess with his own hands, and thus prac- tically imparted useful knowledge to those willing to learn. In the evening of the sume day he addressed a meeting of far- mers af the same place. He went to New Perth the following day, where he was met at the residence of Mr. John Hamilton by & number of intelligent farmers, whose many questions relating to the subject of cheese making were answered by the Prof- fessor in a satisfactory and skilful manner. The meeting on the evening of the same day at the schoolroom was well attended, and many Important questions bearing on agriculture generally were discussed in a friendly and profitable manner. The fol- lowing day, August Ist, the Professor was the guest of the Hon. George Forbes of Vernon River, where a large meeting, at- tended by over two hundred ladies and gentlemen, was held at the hall in the evening. This was certainly & representative meeting of the people in that beautiful section of the country. The Professor, during the following week, ad- dressed public meetings at New Glasgow, St. Peter's Road, Cavendish, North Milton, Park Corner, Summerside, Crapaud Hall, Kensington and Hamilton Hall, all of which were presided over by leading agri- culturists, and well attended by farmers and others, with their wives and daughters. It may therefore be truthfully affirmed that Professor Robertson's visit and the cordial reception given him cannot fail to produce beneficial results. On leaving the Island, he expressed himself much ploased with the ;eneral prosperity indicated, and said that if the farmers of this Island would wake up to the possibilities within their reach, they would double their incomes and doubie their exports within five years by dairying with the right kind of cows in the right way.
