Big Brothers & Sisters Have a Message for You

Once again Big Broth- ers & Big Sisters are in search of Big Brothers. Even though they have always advertised for both Big Brothers and Big Sisters, there are approximately 72 little boys waiting hopefully for their matches. If you stop to think about it, there is not one reason these matches can not be made.

How much time does it require? As little as 3-4 hours a week and you are on your way to making a differ- ence. Simply include your ‘little’ in your everyday ac- tivities; go for a walk, watch a movie, toss a football around,..do what ever you want. We guarantee that not only will your little person be happy, but so will you!

The professional staff

at Big Brothers & Big Sis- ters carefully screen both Bigs and Littles. Once matched, caseworkers are there to offer support and guidance if ever it is needed. The children in the program range in ages from 6 to 16, and come from one-parent homes. We are not talking about problem kids... just

kids who would appreciate the opportunity to have a mentor...a special friend.

Myths & Facts

MYTH: Being a Big re- quires a lot of time and is ahuge commitment.

FACT: Volunteers gen- erally speed three to four hours a week with their Littles, de- pending of course on their schedule. Bigs see the time spent with their Littles as relax- ing, fun, and an opportunity to participate in activities they both enjoy. The commitment lasts at least 6 months

MYTH: Tobea good Big Brother or Big Sister you have to spend a lot of money going on super outings FACT: Volunteers are encour- aged to spend as little money as possible. Outings can be incor- porated into the individuals life- style. The focus ofthe program is friendship and guidance.

MYTH: The Volunteer Screening Process is lengthy and intimidating.

FACT: In addition to an information session, a case- worker will need to meet with

FACT: Little Brothers and Little Sisters are children from single parent families. Like any other group of chil- dren, some may be having prob- lems but most just want an adult friend.

MYTH: Big Brothers and Big Sisters of P.E.I. has enough volunteers.

FACT: Although there have been many successful matches, more volunteers are always needed. The popularity of the program means that there are many children waiting to be matched. The biggest challenge is trying to recruit volunteers - especially men.
